They should make an Apple iPod version for download at the iTunes site.

Good idea. There's a version of Glaurung for Ipod and I heard it plays at around 2500 elo, have you tried that? What's your impression?

I was about to make a linux build of this. But when my 'grep windows *.c* *.h*' came up with one hit in util.h, I decided it probably wasn't worth the effort.

I don't know why an originally non-windows project got bastardized into a windows only project. There's no reason it must be that way either.

Other than the pipe code, toga was perfectly portable until bitbases and multithreading were added. The bitbases were quite easy to adjust, requiring only preprocessor changes. Multithreading didn't have to be complicated, but often is.

Several recent Toga releases have been increasingly windows specific. I know about Michael Vandenbergh's Posix ports. They are nice, but don't address the real problem of not having a good base for people to use when making additions. Ideally, there should be one [non-header] file in the source that #includes <windows.h>, and the readme ought to point out that to do so elsewhere will make porting more difficult than necessary.

Unlikely, the iPod has a 500mhz cpu and the Glaurung opening book is not large enough. Maybe 2200 ELO. You might want to ask KrazyKen, he seems to study these things.

I've tried several different ipod chess programs, Shredder and Glaurung seem to be the strongest available, but I doubt they are quite at master level. Glaurung is slightly stronger than Shredder only due to the fact that you can give Glaurung more time, where Shredder's levels are fixed.
Glaurung's iPod app is open source, it might not be too difficult to adapt it to use the Toga engine.
