The absolute coolest chess set I ever saw was one made from tons of small components. resistors, capacitors, chokes, transistors, small 7400 series ICs and such. Cray found it somewhere and used it on a few publicity photos somewhere in the 1980 time frame. I though it was the "perfect computer chess set" since the pieces were obviously electonic components glued together in the correct image of traditional chess pieces.
