Playing Ilustrious Morphy Encore

Post by fern »

Morphy Encore under the name -for Europe market -Sandy Encore is one of my most appreciated pieces of my modest collection. It is a chess computer of the end of the 70's or perhaps from 1980. Sturdy made with hard plastic, it is heavy and very well made, probably NOT in China, but in US. The program is , I believe , by Mr Aitken, but surely I am wrong. It plays in slower controls at around 1450-1500 and so is enough strong to give a decent game and being smashed only after some thought. It amazes to see such old contrivance still working fine.
As I have realized in other computers and even engines, the best style to play them is NOT the Best, but giving them a range of randomness in order to have room to avoid its own weak programming.
Just a thought...

The Morphy Encore was programmed by Dan and Kathe Spracklen when they worked for Applied Concepts
this was before they switched companies to go work for Fidelity
you are correct about the rating which is mid 1500's Elo
