Updates to STS [v2.0] Open Files and Diagonals

Post by swami »

Thanks to Jesper Nielsen for finding 5 positions with multiple solutions. Those 5 positions have been replaced with 5 newer ones.

Those who have added the old file to their collection, need to download the new file to replace the existing one with.

Please find the downloads here:

Hi Harun,

Can you find the "STS [2.0] Open Files and Diagonals II.epd " of 12k size under "Attachments" section at the bottom of the page?

Here's the direct link:
http://sites.google.com/site/strategict ... nalsII.epd

Let me know if this works.

Don't know what the problem might be. Are you using linux or something? Because I remember Bob telling me that he got ".bin" file instead of ".epd" file from downloading the last test suite.

Can somebody using linux/firefox tell me if they download it just fine?

Same here - Linux and Firefox worked with no problems on the download.

Hi Swaminathan,

Your testsuites are very interesting and gave surprisingly good estimate
about playing strength. But as usually there are engines, which seems to
ruin every testsuite. In this suite 2 examples: 1) Rybka 2.3.2a is better
than Naum 4 in 4/5 suites, but actually Naum 4 is stronger. Bright 0.4a is MUCH better than Fritz10 in these suites, but F10 is really stronger one.

Hi Jouni, Thanks for the compliment. I believe results from some engines may differ sometimes. It just shows that Bright has better understanding of certain positional patterns than Fritz 10.

Wait for 20 more new test suites in 2-3 years time, all of them underlying key patterns, and run these engines to make comparison. I believe you may get realistic data.

I've only released 5 test suites so far. So data ain't sufficient to make comparison between 2 engines. With 10 or more test suites the data will begin to show more consistency.

As an adage, "more games the better"...likewise, more test suites the better! :)
