For those that can only install from source, and still feel adventurous enough to test the latest WinBoard or XBoard alpha versions: we now have set up a source repository where it is possible to directly load the version I am working on. This (git) repository is at http://hgm.nubati.net/cgi-bin/gitweb.cg ... ;a=summary . A tar ball (*.tar.gz) can be obtained by clicking the "snapshot" link of the top line. (You can also do this for lower lines, in case you want to try an earlier version because the latest version is fatally bugged for you.)
To build XBoard under Linux, use:
./autogen.sh
./configure
make
sudo make install
The version that is there now has all the XBoard upgrades ported from WinBoard (EvalGraph window, Settings file, File-Browse dialog), plus all the truly new features (exploring multiple variations, improved multi-PV support, scrolling through the PV, highlighting of move target squares, editing holdings in EditPosition mode).
Have fun!
