That's good right?

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

Thanks Paulo :) ! Good to see you post again. We're not allowed to bring out Stockfish 1.6.3 :( At least not under that name and number. So I was thinking of calling it Schumacher, Schumacher 1.6.3s(dc) - "The hijacked version". How does that sound?

More seriously, I did not mean to hijack the number 1.6.3 or the name Stockfish but Stockfish 1.6.3 can never be the numbering of the official version now I think, because there is already an unofficial one, unless we change the name of the 1.6.3s. The new name could either be Dancing Dragon 1.6.3s or Rainbow Serpent 1.6.3s or Dann should decide he wants his sources back or thinks of a good name himself! Is anyone still following, probably not. Rainbow Serpent 1.6.3s is a likely name.

Eelco

Thanks for the hospitality, Eelco! I thought you were testing a 1.6.3 Stockfish version , but I see I was wrong.
Are you programming Stockfish too?

Paulo

I'm hoping more people will come back Paulo! Where is Tony Thomas gone to, for instance, he can't just leave. Is Pete Galati still alive do you think from way back around 2000 on CCC, and I hope Jeroen is okay, not Jeroen Noomen but the other Jeroen, I can't remember his last name now.

I can see why you might have gtten the impression that Stockfish 1.6.3 was already out. It's not really Stockfish programming what I'm doing but the 1.6.3s(dc) were just some modifications to a Stockfish version from Dann Corbit, that was called "Smooth Scaling Stockfish". I made some small modifications to the Singular TT-Extensions that are I'm afraid really from Rybka 3. The least we should do is try to improve the idea a bit I think and try to be original. So that is now the task for Rainbow Serpent. When it is ready, look for it on the Toga Developers Bulletin Board. There is an old version called "Dancing Dragon" too but it has a buggy Null move.

Eelco

My hope also is that R4 comes out and that Stockfish improves. Stockfish has made remarkable progress and is my main "sanity checker" in some positions where I feel that R3 might have problems or a position where one of R3's bugs might corrupt analysis. It would be silly to assume that Stockfish should not make use of ideas that were disassembled from R3. The ethical problems lie elsewhere. I would like to see the development of Stockfish improve in several areas where I think there is still a target rich environment for improvement:

1. Implementing cluster type development. I think that would be simple to do as I mentioned much longer ago (before R3 cluster came out). Simply branch out with one Master and several Slaves that can reach much higher depths on main lines.

2. Implementing bit base data in search with Nalimov backup support once a bit base point is hit. Bitbases have a much smaller footprint and should easily fit in RAM or SSD and should give a dramatic improvement in analysis capability, maybe this would also translate in more ELO.
