Playing against an engine under SCID

Post by Amstaff »

Hello, I use SCID mostly as a database, but would like to play a few games against the analysis engines. I just loaded Deep Junior 11.1a and played a blitz game against it. It seemed to play in a handicap mode, giving away pawns everywhere and making harmless King moves, even in the opening.
Has anyone played games using SCID? It is a great database.
Thanks,
Gerald

Did you try another engine, like Toga that comes with Scid ?

I play games using SCID against engines like Stockfish, Toga, Fruit, Rybka-3, Spark, Komodo ...

They play bloody strong and wipe the floor with me every single time.

I also play Crafty using Xboard (I run Linux; you could also use WinBoard on Windows) and use the SKILL parameter to weaken it enough so I can have a decent game with it.

Hello, I tried Toga and it played very strong as expected. Perhaps there is something wrong with Junior. In principle I should be able to load Hiarcs, Shredder, Deep Sjeng, etc. under SCID and they should work fine, don't you think?
Thanks for your reply.

You can download an evaluation version of Deep Junior 11.1a here.

This version plays very weak, actually seeming to avoid winning. Is it possible that's what you are using?
