cutechess-cli question

The README file that comes with the cutechess-cli binary contains the following snippet

ENGINE OPTIONS
--------------

conf=<arg>::
Use an engine with the name <arg> from Cute Chess\' configuration
file.

Does anyone know how to use this option? In particular what is the
format of the configuration file and how should cutechess-cli find it?
