Hi all,
Does anyone know where I can find some old Winboard engines (as old as possible), pre-compiled? I found version 3.1 of GNUchess but only the source code. I'll blame the CS courses I took for being too theoretical, cause I don't know how to compile stuff. Thanks!

Re: Old Winboard Engines
Jim Ablett did a great job porting old GnuChess as winboard engines.

Very cool - thanks. Another engine with old versions available is obviously Crafty. Any idea what the oldest available version with Winboard support is? I have version 8 I think, although I can't quite get it to work properly with Arena.

The release notes for version 1.12 mention xboard support. The notes for 9.18 say "Xboard compatibility version!". See main.cPeteshnick wrote:Very cool - thanks. Re: Old Winboard Engines
I found this page in German (thanks Google Translate!) with a Xboard/Winboard version of Micro Chess (1976), which seems to be one of the oldest commercially available microcomputer chess programs... http://www.andreadrian.de/schach/index.html
You can find a download link and some more information in the "Micro Chess Computer Chess from 1976" section of the page. It's rated about 900 or so, so even patzers like me have a chance...

Yace is another "oldie but goodie".
You can find a few older versions of Arasan here:
http://arasanchess.org/downld.shtml
including even 1.0, but I think version 5.4 was the first reasonably non-buggy Winboard version. I can get you some older versions if you want but I think you may have some operational problems with them.
