FruitFly 1.1 vs. DiscoCheck 3.6.1 : 1.0

Post by ZirconiumX »

Yes, Lucas, I know this version of DiscoCheck is buggy, but it did play a nice game against FruitFly 1.1.

Here FruitFly 1.1 is out of book (DiscoCheck was never in book to begin with...)

[d]r1b1kb1r/pppp2pp/2n5/1B3p2/3Nn2q/8/PPP2PPP/RNBQR1K1 w kq - 1 7

FruitFly is feeling pretty confident, rating itself ahead by about a pawn.

Then some fairly standard moves by DiscoCheck:

[d]r1b1k2r/p1pp2pp/2p2q2/2b2p2/3Nn3/5PP1/PPP4P/RNBQR1K1 w kq - 1 10

But here DiscoCheck makes what FruitFly reckons is a mistake:

[d]r1b2rk1/p1pp2pp/2p2q2/2b5/3Np3/2N1B1P1/PPP4P/R2QR1K1 b - - 1 13

It plays 13...Qg6. FruitFly prefers 13...d5. And here is why:

[d]r1b2rk1/p1p3pp/1bp3q1/3p4/3NpN2/4B1P1/PPP4P/R2QR2K b - - 1 16

White advanced his Nc3 to f4 (via e2) meaning Black has to waste another tempo moving his Queen back to f6.

After White plays Rf1:

[d]r1b2rk1/p1p3pp/1bp2q2/3p4/3NpN2/4B1P1/PPP4P/R2Q1R1K b - - 3 17

White's threat is Nfe6, so White wastes *another* tempo by moving the queen to d6.

After 22...Bf3+ both sides have dangerous attacks, making this an extremely sharp middlegame.

[d]1r4k1/p1p2r1p/1bpq2p1/3p2Q1/2PNpN2/4BbP1/PP5P/2R2R1K w - - 6 22

After 22. c5 Bxc5 White offers an exchange sacrifice by 23. Rxc5 which is accepted by DiscoCheck.

[d]4r1k1/p1p2r1p/2p3p1/2qp2Q1/3NpN2/4BbP1/PP5P/5RK1 w - - 0 25

Here FruitFly plays the rather spectacular 24. Nxg6! Rg7 25. Nxf3.

DiscoCheck is obviously seeking counterplay by playing 25...Qc2. But it is a bit late.

After a long exchange:

[d]6k1/p1p3rp/2p5/3pN3/3Np3/4B1P1/PP5P/5K2 b - - 0 31

White has more pieces, but much less pawns. FruitFly quickly fixes this.

[d]4r3/B1p3kp/2N5/3pN3/4p3/6P1/PP5P/5K2 w - - 1 33

The a-pawn is passed, and Black's rook and king are a bit tied up at the moment.

[d]r7/2B4p/2N1k3/P2pN3/1P2p3/6P1/4K2P/8 b - b3 0 39

Now look at this position: White has two passed pawns, and so does Black. Black's rook follows the Tarrasch rule, and his king is pretty active. But White is up on material.

[d]3N4/P6p/1B1k4/3p3r/1P2p3/6P1/4K2P/8 w - - 1 43

For Black the game is as good as lost.

I'm a bit gutted that this ended in a time forfeit though.

Hi Matthew,

What was the time control ? Looks like a blitz game, does'nt it ?

Cheers,

Game in one minute plus one second per move. Lucas said that DC's strong point was at millisecond levels, which my gui can't do. And I did want a game you could actually see, rather than my comp using around 4 hours to get a perfectly drawn game.
