In fact it seems very awkward period!
This is the first time i have had my own computer to download it on to, and i thought AT LAST! I can have the time of my life, everything i wanted to do for years.
And in fact, at first, it looked quite impressive, with a few free engines including Rybka 2.2, etc.
But when i wanted to force moves until a position i wanted to see it analyse, i just could not find the way to do it.
In the end, i found how to set up a position, but i don't know how to move around the pieces whilst seeing analysis, or how to see clearly the first few favorite lines of play.

Well, I don't know Arena. In WinBoard you would simply select Mode->Analysis from the menu, after starting with an engine, and you could enter moves by dragging the pieces over the board, or paste a FEN to setup a position, etc. The Engine-Output window would open automatically, and you could position and size it anywhere/anyway you want.

  1. Set up a position.
  2. Click on the analyze button.
  3. Click on the edit button near the analyze button.
  4. One of the squares will have a purple box drawn around it along the edges of the square. Click on this square to eliminate this purple box highlighted square.
After you do these 3 things, you will be able to make moves that arena will automatically analyze as well. It's an annoying procedure, but that's the way it is.

BTW, if later, if you inadvertently click on a square so that it becomes highlighted, you will be blocked from being able to make moves again. Click on the square a 2nd time to fix.

Thanks!
I'll be trying it.
