Hey George,

Exciting as always. I'm not dissatisfied w/ the new version of Djinn regardless of how
the final three games turn out. Some of the other engines have had bad luck, but still
it's always nice when you flip a coin and it comes up your way. :)

AND FINAL RESULTS FOR GROUP 9!- Sat., Oct 6

Post by geots »

This is the one I know at least a couple people have been waiting on. And it did not disappoint. Gosu and Gaia are nice programs- always were! But it "is what it is", and I promise you they both played well above their ratings. It happens.

Let me sort of switch gears here before posting the results. I just happened to be watching the ending of one game a couple rounds ago, and I noticed Gaia was making TB hits in all his thinking lines. I mentioned it to Tom Likens of Djinn, and he is likely the smartest person I have ever met- and he couldn't come up with an answer either. Except that he has seen something similar once or twice due to a bug in the system. And I know I wasn't seeing things, because I sent Tom the PGN set for this group match as soon as it ended- per his request. And he saw it.

In Gaia's first game ag. Djinn, at the top of the PGN was average ply depth and average kNs. and it also showed for Gaia: 7,880,000 TBAs

Now, I searched after Tom told me to type in for the file ".emd". It showed a shitload of Tablebase files in Windows/tb. Problem is I went thru every Windows folder on the XP system (no, it was not my i5- but the xp quad) and they are not to be found. But it couldn't matter anyway, because Gaia is UCI, and I had removed all the TB paths in the gui when I started the RR. So there is no way Gaia could have found them either. I had a better chance
than he did.

Ok- nothing in his folder about TBs, and I tried to check parameters- but Gaia has none. And running the exe in console mode showed nothing. And it was showing TB usage in every game that went into an endgame.

Not that it makes any difference, because like Tom agreed with me- TB usage- if that is actually what it was- would hurt him more than it would help.

But it is one of those things that is driving me crazy. (And yes, I unchecked the "keep system files hidden" box- still no help in finding it.) The person who can solve this riddle will henceforth be given the name: "gg" - (gui genius)

Well, on to the final 3 rounds and the 2 engines who lived to play another day:

Intel XP 64-bit Quad
Fritz 11 gui/Fritz 13 gui

PatzerUCI v Horizon 4.4 (1-0)
Simplex 0.9.8 64-bit v Amateur 2.82 (1-0)

Djinn 0.960.2 x64 v Thor's Hammer 2.28 (0-1)
Gaia 3.5 v Ares 1.004 (draw)

Code: Select all

Final Standings
----------------

1.Djinn 0.960.2 x64** 20.0

3.Gaia 3.5 18.5

9.Comet B68 14.5
10.Alex 2.14a x64 14.5
11.PikoSzachy 4.0 14.0
12.Sorgenkind 0.4 14.0
13.Ares 1.004 13.5
14.Tytan 9.3 11.5
15.Horizon 4.4 10.0
16.Amateur 2.82 9.5

So- it is:

1.Djinn 0.960.2 x64

2. Gosu 0.16

And at the conclusion of all RRs- they too will be playing a 40/40 match for their "Group Championship".

Hope you enjoyed it-

Re: A MEGA FREEWARE Footnote of Importance!

Post by geots »

I have finished RRs 14, 13, 12, 11 , 10 and 9. I am, as you saw a bit ago, running Group 7 and Group 8. Normally I would start at least 2 more at this time- but I am going to have to hold off for maybe 24 to 72 hours. Of course 7 and 8 will continue running.

But my new 4 core i5 has come in. Bit faster than my semi-new one I have had since Jan., and double the hard drive space to a terabyte. I have to network them, hook up a router, change all their silly defaults, install Firefox, install Fritz 11, Fritz 13 and Shredder 11 guis, install 3 new Usernames, decide the quickest and easiest way to get all engines in all usernames. (Put them in one username- they don't show up installed in any of the others.) And decide after all this is done- if I want to go ahead and order another just like it. That would give me 16 true cores w/no hyperthreading, counting my XP quad.

Anyway, I want to give most of my attention to this- so when I am thru- we are ready to roll on.

George,

Thanks for running this--it's been fun to watch and follow. Also thank you for the kind words.
I mentioned it to Tom Likens of Djinn, and he is likely the smartest person I have ever met
If this is true then you need to meet more people. :D

But, to keep this myth alive please stay away from Tord, Remi, Bob, Don, ... pretty much everyone else on this forum!.

best,
