I can't deal with much more of this. It makes no sense. I had a list of more than a dozen and I can go back and list them again. But the point is, it is the same story over and over. And many with lack of websites- no support- nothing. Good example: Last night I tried to install Sting SF PV 120629 x64. Strictly UCI. Basically the only thing I get that I can use is 1 64-bit exe. All I can do is put a logo with it and name it. THAT IS IT. Double click the exe and install. Well- it says "Engine Won't Load". I know it is a derivative of Stockfish- if I am to believe all I read. So what? Why won't the engine load? I WANT TO LOAD AND USE IT! I have no options- nothing I can change except "compatibility" settings. And that would mean the author did not program it so it would work on the latest technology- tho it was available. Look, program a new UCI engine that won't work on a Win7 Intel i5 system- my question is why did you bother with the goddam thing anyway!
I cannot find my list- but I jotted down a few. No one can use the winboard excuse here- they are UCI- and they won't load.

Protej
PLP
Jazz
Godel- it loads ok, but it is both WB and UCI. I loaded it as UCI- he then says as UCI it has a bug, don't use it that way. And I have heard nothing since.
But especially, Sting! Can anyone get me folders that will work, PLUS tell me why I am having to ask for help!
Thank you,
george

I use the following engines as winboard engines under ChessGUI because I had issues trying to use them as uci engines under Fritz.geots wrote:I cannot find my list- but I jotted down a few. No one can use the winboard excuse here- they are UCI- and they won't load.

Sting should work as a uci engine under Fritz without any problems. I can run it under Windows 7 on both my i5 and octal, plus under WinXP on my Q6600.
Using a GUI like Arena or ChessGUI gives the option of running both winboard and uci engines, which is one reason why I moved away from the Fritz GUI.

Sting needs the following file in the engine folder - libmmd.dll

First, where might I get that file?
Secondly, for what it is worth, I think the time to babysit these new programmers should halt. As long as we grapple with different guis, changing stuff out, running a UCI as winboard- they have no incentive to program their engines correctly. But as long as they know CCRL or another group will finish the job they should have- what incentive do they have to be anything but sloppy. Try a UCI gui- chessbase- Matthias' gui- Shredder11- I dont care. But if it doesn't work in the first you try- send it back- tell them to get off their butts and do it right if they want it tested.
Keep this up- and they will never do better.
(This is one of the 2 main reasons Leo quit.)
BTW, again- where might I find that file?

I had to google the file. Should be easy to find.geots wrote:Graham Banks wrote:Sting needs the following file in the engine folder - libmmd.dll

It's not my place to tell programmers what to do with their engines. I'm just grateful that they share them with us.
Why Olivier or Leo or anybody else chooses to quit is entirely their business.

The file is no good. However, since I started this utter attempt at futility with a post- I have no one to blame but myself.

George, the file on this page worked for me in Fritz 8.
https://sites.google.com/site/chessbouq ... -microsoft
Download the Librerias x64 download, and copy the libmmd.dll file into the same folder containing the x64 Sting executable file.
Keep the faith.

George, you are an experienced on this forum.
You should know that having a search engine.

has download almost 1000 times.
Nobody is to blame for the executables need these libraries.
You should know these things, you are an expert.
Thanks, George.

Besides I can tell you that the file in my site mediafirelech wrote:Sting_SF_PV (pv means phinal version) is based on Stockfish 2.1.1 .
It contains all my ideas to try to make this engine more human and useful in analysis and play.

Just to note, your i5 is a first generation i5 and George has second and third generation i5 machines. Totally different CPUs. But I agree, with the right DLLs it should workGraham Banks wrote: Sting should work as a uci engine under Fritz without any problems.
