Though I'm not sure if this thread belongs here, I usually listen to Orange by Waterflame
. It is a chirpy song, and kinda sums me up rather well.

Although I like music, when I am programming, I need to focus my brain on the task at hand. And music really breaks my concentration. Same for reading: I can only read when I'm alone in a very quiet place, otherwise I get distracted.smatovic wrote:Wonder if others listen to music while programming or prefer a calm surrounding...

Maybe I have A.D.D. ?
Theory and practice sometimes clash. And when that happens, theory loses. Every single time.

I prefer to listen to music while programming. For me it's not a distraction but rather I enjoy the rhythm as it actually helps me concentrate. Almost like having a side carrier for the brain waves to ride on lol.
Lately been listening to Christmas music.

Re: Do you listen to music while programming?
I find it too difficult to concentrate when listening to music. I'm a focuser, when I do listen to music I want to listen fully engaged, not just as background noise.
When I'm watching a movie or television I am the same way. I cannot have the television running in the background while I am doing other things and if I'm in group with people who like to talk during the movie it leaves me completely unsatisfied that I was not able to focus on every nuance. That is the worst because I cannot focus on the conversations either.
I think that society has changed since the era of music video's. People now require rich and noisy environments to combat their boredom - to the point that that now we have to be entertained even when we should should be focused. You see this with the fact that more and more people have a cell phone practically glued to their ear. They are bored.

Capital punishment would be more effective as a preventive measure if it were administered prior to the crime.

Re: Do you listen to music while programming?
I listen to music while programming just to cancel out background noise! Since background noise is tipically unpredictable, I cannot concentrate. Music, instead, is highly predictable (note: music I've listened to for a long time and I know very well), it is louder than the background noise and isolates me completely.
Of course I need sometimes to focus on some hard algorithmic coding and thus I have to stop my music.

Re: Do you listen to music while programming?
My wife often plays music while I am programming, but I do not listen to it. I am not sure whether that counts as a yes or no. It is not that I dislike the music wy wife likes to play (which is also true); when I am programming I would not even hear it in any case.
