iOS Tournament

Post by JuLieN »

Instead of creating a new thread for each match of the tournament I'll rather have a single "iOS Tournament" thread.

I'll copy/paste the rules again:
As was discussed in this topic, I'm starting a small tournament for iOS chess programs. I selected 17 programs:

- Battle of the Elements
- Chess Fortress (Cheng 3)
- ChessGenius
- Chess Legends (Komodo 4)
- Chess O (Not available anymore in the AppStore?)
- Chess Partner
- Chess Pro (Chess Tiger)
- CoreChess HD
- FatBird Chess++
- Fritz
- Hiarcs Chess HD
- iChess
- iGrandMaster
- Ohm Chess HD
- Shredder HD
- Stockfish
- tChess Pro

And maybe more if someone suggest some.

All the engines will be opposed to all other engines during 4-games long matches running at 30mn/side for the game, on a New iPad (iPad 3?).
In the previous thread, four games were played between HIARCS and stockfish (remember to click on the three dots "..." to see the list of the games) ☟

This match was won by stockfish quite comfortably 3-1 (+2-0=2), with the third game being especially beautiful.

The second match opposed StockFish to Chess Tiger, with Stockfish outclassing Chess Tiger 3-1 (+2-0=2). Actually, Chess Tiger plays beautifully, but is clearly designed to play against humans: it has a very daring style, tailored to impress his human opponents. Sadly, it doesn't work against the cold, logic Stockfish. Here are the four games ☟

Re: iOS Tournament

Post by JuLieN »

Surprisingly, despite I thought Shredder would be crushed by Stockfish it ended up as its strongest opponent up to now, and several times I thought it would be the first application to defeat the leader. Stockfish won the match 2.5-1.5 (+1,-0,=3) but it was very close. In the first three games Shredder often had a better position and, in the third game was really close to win (it had two pawns more than Stockfish, and those pawns were passed and linked!), but Stockfish pulled an out-of-this-word defense and managed to get a draw. The fourth game saw Shredder play an horrible opening. It kind of managed to get a lot of counter play eventually, but Stockfish played all the most accurate moves and Shredder soon resigned. Shredder seems to have a very defensive style. Anyway, enough with all this babbling... Here are the four games (click on the three dots "..." to see their list):

Re: iOS Tournament

Post by JuLieN »

Shredder proved too strong for HIARCS and won the match comfortably 3-0 (+3-1=0). Shredder played many remarkable moves. The way it wins the fourth game, with turning its opponent's bishop into a very bad one, and its own into a very good one is remarkable. The third game is also beautiful.

Here are the games. As usual click on the three dots ("...") to access the list of games. An oddity is that three of the games were won with black pieces.

Next match will be Shredder - Chess Tiger. Considering how risky Chess Tiger plays, and how strongly positional Shredder is, the odds are not in favor of Chess Tiger; but who knows?

Re: iOS Tournament

Despite Chess Tiger gave a good fight on the board Shredder won this match quite convincingly. The first game, in particular, saw a greedy Tiger eating offered pawns in the opening and being punished in a book-example show by Shredder, developing his pieces, castling and building an irresistible attack against the black king left in the center.

Here are the four games (click on the three dots "..." to see their list):

Re: iOS Tournament

Post by JuLieN »

I reviewed the 165 chess playing applications I have on my iPad* and selected all of them that seem to have an original engine and can play at my tournament's cadence (30 min/game). The bad news is that I had to remove Deep Green Chess, who can't play at this cadence, but could add many more. The tournament will take time to complete (it is manually operated), but promise to be interesting. :)

Here's the new tournament grid:

- Note that Chess Fortress is powered by our Martin Sedlak's "Cheng 3" engine.
- Also, if one of those engines was a clone of another engine yet participating to this tournament, it would be removed. (I sent a mail to Lokasoft asking about Chess Partner's engine, and another mail to iChess's author).
- Last note : Battle of the Elements and FatBird Chess can play at 30mn/game but have no opening book, so they will rely on other engine's book for diversity, and will only play two games when meeting each others (I'll double their score in their match to get the same total as for the other engines).
- SmallChess might also join the tournament when Tim Chan tells me more about its engine's origin.

Stockfish won this match very easily, only letting half a point escape. Chess Genius is the first engine up to now that gives the impression it just doesn't play in the same league as the leaders'. Two games illustrate this fact particularly well. The second one, where Chess Genius let Stockfish totally strangle it, and the fourth one where Stockfish built a ravishingly deadly attack against a clueless opponent, eventually checkmating Chess Genius at the 36th move.

Here are the four games. As usual, click on the three dots "..." to access to their list :

Too bad. It has a long history going back to the Apple Newton, where it was the strongest program available. Its use of the Cheq font for pieces went well with the Newton's icon theme. It is called Deep Green because of the Newton's green LCD backlight and the Newton's dark green rubberized casing. At the time it used John Stanback's pre-GnuChess SCP engine because it compiled to a very small size. As far as I know it still does, which probably puts it way out of league with the other programs.

I look forward to your tournament! Some advice: it would make for more suspense and a shorter tournament if you play new entrants from the bottom up until they are obviously outclassed. (For example, starting with Genius vs. Tiger, instead of vs. Stockfish.)

I am a big fan of Deep Green Chess as well, so it was heartbreaking to remove it... but it just doesn't fit the criteria to enter this tournament. But as I now see I'm not the only fan of this program maybe I'll add it when the normal tournament is done. :)

At first I thought it was a good idea, and I was about to write "I'll do it!", but on second thoughts isn't there some suspense anyway? For instance, yes, I don't think Genius gets any chance against Shredder and HIARCS, but maybe it will be able to score a whole point against Tiger? If I start with Tiger and Genius can't score even a point, then all the remaining matches will be without suspense... And I want a full grid. ;)

By the way, given that this tournament's update has a slow pace (because it is manually operated), I wouldn't mind some help. Do you think you could, for instance, start the matches with Fritz against the top engines? Then I'd continue with tChess Pro and so on... A 30mn/side game needs about 1h15mn to complete by hand (if the engines use all their time). You could communicate me the results and games and I'd fill the grid. :)

The games have to be played on a single device (so both opponents have the same hardware) and we switch from app to app (which pauses the opponent, perfect for the human operator, even if a bit tedious).

Shredder won the match, as was expected, but not as easily as we could have thought. Chess Genius even managed to win the third game, exposing a big hole in Shredder's endings technics, and pushed Shredder to the 97th move in the second game (an instructive ending anyway : how to checkmate a naked king with two bishops). The first and last games went easy for Shredder. As a consequence, this round saw Stockfish increase its leadership over Shredder by half a point.

The next match will oppose Chess Genius to HIARCS.

I also got the confirmation from Lokasoft that the engine powering Chess Partner iOS is genuine : "the engine is a port of the Lokasof standard engine from the ChessPartner PC version (also known as LCHESS)" so its participation to the tournament is confirmed as well and promise to be interesting!
