Is There Any Way Someone Could Help With An Engine!!!

Post by geots »

It is a very old- like 2003, commercial engine. I wanted a copy just to have it, and I found someone who was willing to sell it for 20 bucks. Being old is not an issue- it doesn't wear out.

In his defense, selling it "as is", he still told me he had the same problem I have now. So he could not help. I would not have bought it, except I saw where CCRL has tested it, and it rates a bit above 2300. It is WChess 1.06

Problem is it runs and plays ok- except it uses almost no hash. Strange, but when it is sitting still and you check parameters- it does not have hash size in there. But when it is playing engine-engine, you can place the cursor in the area where its thinking lines are, and right-click. It brings up a list- click on properties and it shows you, I assume, param settings with the hashsize in bottom right. and it is set on 1 MB. No matter what I do, I cannot change it and make it stay on 64, 96, 128 or whatever. It goes right back to "1 MB".
And 1 MB means in task manager it runs around 11,000 k memory.

Anyone who has tested this engine, I feel fairly certain they did not run the engine on 1 MB hash. Is there anyone, anywhere who can help me solve this hash problem and tell me the proper procedure for changing hash.

Thanks,

george

I found a backup web of Immortal223 Forum where someone uploaded WChess 1.6 (I do not now if it is the same as 1.06). Indeed the date of the binary is 07/07/2003.

I tried it in Arena 2.0.1 and I saw 11576 KB of RAM usage, so I guess it has the same problem. Anyway, you can try it, just in case.

It appears that WChess 1.6 is an engine included with the commercial product Majestic Chess:

http://www.stmintz.com/ccc/index.php?id=449631

Therefore, the download link to the engine had to be removed.

Thanks, Jesus. But I have never noticed it on Immortal. I would have thought links like that would have been dead years ago. It is not really the $ I spent so much as I got interested when Dave stopped on the forum a while back- if you remember. I know that CCRL tests it, or did. So I figured someone from there could tell me if there is a way they figured out to change the hash, or if they just left it on 1 MB- which is not much more than none. I just cannot imagine them testing it with 1 MB hash at 40/40 repeating.

I just hope if the mods remove anything at all- they at least leave my threads. I really need the help.

Best,

george

Aser Huerga was the CCRL member who tested it. You could try contacting him, perhaps by PM. He pops in from time to time.

He checks in about once a year. Would it be a problem for you to tell him my issue and ask him to PM me- or direct him to these threads?

Amusing. I guess that's what the engine calls itself. I worked on Majestic Chess as an Associate Producer (not a programmer). That engine is by David Kittinger.

Hello George,

WChess 1.06 was included in the first gauntlet I run for CCRL, and I think there's no way to change the around 11.000-12.000 k hash memory it shows, so I tested it this way.
Sorry I'm not a great help.

Cheers.

In fact, you are quite a big help. And I thank you for taking the time to stop and help me. Your answer is just as valuable to me as it would have been if you told me how to change it. Because knowing you had to test it this way, it won't bother me at all to do it as well. When one with your expertise tells me this- I can rest easy with testing it myself.

Thanks again, and all the best to you-

george
