Internet access problem

Post by hgm »

I have an Asus laptop running Win 8, and since this morning I no longer can browse the internet on it. Even when I type the IP address of the wireless router directly in the address bar, it says 'connecting', basically forever. When I use ftp from the command prompt, or connect with WinBoard to freechess.org, everything works fine. Other computers on my WLAN work fine.

When I call up the 'Networks; sidebar of Win 8, it says for 'Connections': "Unidentified network Limited", which did not use to be there. In the list of WiFi networks the first one listed is my own, "wlan@home", which says "Connected". No matter how much I connect or disconnect that, switch flight mode on or off, reboot the laptop, the unidentified network with limited connectivity always remains displayed there. When I hover above the WiFi icon in the system tray, a popup box mentions both "wlan@home Internet access" and "Unidentified network No internet access".

When I opened the Network and Sharing Center, it lists two networks: "wlan@home, access type: Internet, Connections: WiFi" and "Unidentified network, access type: No network access, Connections: VirtualBox Host-Only Network". When I click on wlan@home there, to open the 'WiFi Status' dialog, it says: "IPv4 Connectivity: Internet" and "IPv6 Connectivity: No Internet Access". When I click Details there, it turns out that IPv4 has a default gateway, DHCP server and DNS, (the IP of my router in my WLAN), while IPv6 has no gateway or DNS assigned (and DHCP server is not even mentioned there).

Weird thing is that when I start up VirtualBox to run Ubuntu, the network works fine. In fact this message was posted using FireFox in that VirtualBox. And, as I already mentioned, internet access that does not involve the browser, with ftp or WinBoard, works fine. I don't know if anything I mentioned above is relevant, or even out of the ordinary.

Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem?

I'm not sure what this has to do with computer chess programming or even programming in general, and I do not think it is a good idea to use this forum as a general "please help me I have a problem", but did you try rebooting the wireless router and/or cable/DSL modem behind it. (I recently had the problem that I could not access google.com and some other sites, but could access national versions of google and most of the internet, which only went away after I discovered I had no problems from my mobile phone using WLAN (same router though) and decided to reboot the router.)

Go to the internet options in your browser and check the proxy server setting. Should not be one. Lots of people hijack by sticking something in there so that you always go to their web site first...
