Arasan 17.1-Toga II 1.4b5

Post by jdart »

I noticed that Arasan's rating (for example on CEGT) is creeping up near that of this older Toga release (1.4b5) which in its time was considered quite a strong program. So I ran a short match with these results:

1 Arasan 17.1 2404 7 7 2099 51% 2396 35%
2 Toga1.4b5 2396 7 7 2099 49% 2404 35%

Each engine had one core. Time control 4/1. I used a Linux port of Toga from this site: http://hardy.uhasselt.be/Toga/posix_versions/.

1 Arasan 17.1 2404 7 7 2099 51% 2396 35%
2 Toga1.4b5 2396 7 7 2099 49% 2404 35%
So they are about equal? This is quite surprising.

The version development version of GNU Chess that has been playing on FICS for 9 months now is 40 elo stronger than Toga 1.4.1SE (which is almost the same as 1.4b5).

Now the version of Arasan that plays on FICS is considerably higher rated than GNU Chess.

So the rating difference between GNU and Arasan on FICS would be due to the fact that Arasan is multi threaded and uses faster hardware?
Ideas=science. Simplification=engineering.
Without ideas there is nothing to simplify.

Yes, I think so. Arasan on FICS is mostly playing with 4 cores on an Intel i5-2500k. The 4-core version is a lot stronger than a 1-core version.
