Building a bug-free endgame test suite using automation
Basic Chess Endings was a valuable and unique resource back in its day, but not so much in the days since the tablebases.
Here's my suggestion:
1: Get a chess program which has access to a sufficiently complete set of tablebase files, and which can read FEN/EPD (preferably from a file, not just from interactive input).
2: Write a utility which for any endgame class, can produce N valid positions from that class, each randomly selected, and write these to a file.
3: Run the results from the utility program through the chess program and collect the Ultimate Truth and record this in EPD.
4: Hey presto, Bob's your uncle, you now have a bug-free endgame test suite. Put these on the net to share with others.

Does anyone have a source of starting positions which can be used to test and changes I make? I'm thinking PGN format would be ideal.

Here are 425 rook and pawn start position in pgn format from Frank's tournaments. The games are from sf6, k8, gull3 and fire4.
Extraction criteria:
1. (wp+bp) > 1 and (wp+bp) <= 4 and abs(wp-bp) <= 1
2. wr = 1
3. br = 1
4. evaluation comment in pgn is within +/- 120 cp
5. total pieces = 2, (pawns and kings are excluded)
Position is considered only once per game. Duplicates are already removed.
The game record is cut-off at a point where the conditions are meet. Check your tour manager if it will increase start TC while reading the these moves, then you may adjust your TC.
I have a database with about 80,000 games that have rook and pawn endings. Over 8,000 of these are annotated so that should help you a little. I'm not sure about copyright of the annotated games, but I guess I could strip those games out or remove the annotations.
If you're interested let me know.
