To Larry kaufman and Mark Lefler

Post by TShackel »

Hi,

Have you decided how to notify the people who paid for the subscription service when an update is available? Will you notify on this forum, or on your website, or even via email?

I was just curious. I still have a lot of testing to do with Komodo 9.0 before there's another update but was just wondering. :)

Thanks,

Tim.

Hahahahahahaha, I really doubt there will be another update for at least two months... wouldn't the engine just show up on your account on their website? Then they will just send all of the subscribers a mass email.

I wasn't asking when, nor am I in a hurry to get that. I'm just wondering how they intend to inform people that there is an update. I'm happy with the play of Komodo 9.0 quite frankly and they made good improvement. I have a lot of testing to do before another update.

The plan is to both announce here, on the Komodo Chess facebook page and send out emails. The email system is untested so far. But in any case, new versions will appear in subscriber's accounts on komodochess.com.

Hi,

Thanks Mark. Announcing here is good, but if I happen to miss it I'd really appreciate the email as well.

Thanks for all the work you do. Komodo plays really good moves is all I have say. ::)

Sincerely,

Tim.

Komodo 9.0 is substantially stronger than 8.0 at 1 minute + 1 second increment . And I started a round robin at longer time control, ie 90 minutes + 20 seconds increment which is usually 3+ hours per game with Komodo, Stockfish, and Gull 3.0. I did a tournament with Houdini instead of Gull first but Komodo and Stockfish "crushed" houdini. Whereas Gull can at least get several draws. Maybe it has to do with the style of houdini's play that is bad against komodo and stockfish. Komodo started out after crushing houdini at the same rating as stockfish development version, but in the second tournament agaist gull, komodo won once, but also lost once, and many draws with gull too. So it's rating dropped due to draws with a lower rated gull, and also because it lost to gull once too. So it's rating dropped 30 points, and the last tournament had komodo lose to stockfish, and many draws with the weaker gull and no wins. So that dropped Komodo another 30 elo, but is still stronger than Komodo 8.0's rating but not by much. However, that should change if komodo plays weaker opposition instead of the top three all the time.

Sincerely,

Tim.

Note we did update Komodo 9 (as version 9.01) today. Just go to your komodochess.com account and redownload Komodo 9 to get the update.

Thanks Mark. Do you think it's necessary to use this update (and thus change all of our test results for Komodo 9.0) if we use fritz/chessbase interface, and if we use time controls with increments typically? In other words, I've never had Komodo lose on time before. I will definitely download the update at some point, but to be consistent I wanted to keep using Komodo 9.0 since I never noticed a problem.

Thanks again for all the quick updates/correction!

Sincerely,

Tim.

Tim,

Games with any increment above 0 are not changed by the update. And games of X moves in Y minutes are also not changed. Just sudden death games which have no increment. I also no of no issue with the Chessbase GUI. For your setup I see no reason to update.

Just to check, you are using the Windows 64 bit version of Komodo 9, right? If you were using the slower 32 bit version in MP mode, then you should update.
