Test position - Jakovenko, D.–Vachier Lagrave, M.

Post by Ferdy »

How do other engines react to the pawn thrust h4? MVL here played e5.
I am in the process of re-writing my king safety. Opening the h-file is one, fracturing the pawn shelter is the other.

It looks like this is a position where Stockfish plays differently with PV searches than with the normal search, with only the PV move searched with a full search.

This is normal Stockfish with adapted verification search, that has a little less nullmove, but I don't know if that has an impact here, maybe a little because Multi PV also gives different best moves than single PV.

Normal seach ended with

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

This is a reasonable move not allowing white to open the h-file. It's disadvantage is not developing other pieces that may influence play in the center, but the move h7h6 gives more priority to king safety. I run IDEA and white is trying to attack h6 by standard setup like d3/Be3 followed by Qd2.

Nf6 also stops activity in the h-file. I use sf6, will post IDEA results later when I get some positions.

When I click the link the engine starts immediately, and is using my resources. I don't think this is a good practice, at least provide some button to press whether to run or not, and give warning that it will use my resources.

Fair enough Ferdinand. I won't include the &act=ana (action = analysis) on URLs any more.

WRT a warning when you click Analyse - do you mean your expectation was that it ran on the server and not in your browser?

Yes.
And it does not mean that I am not willing to use my cpu, but often I use my cpu for other activities.

Yep I agree and understand - I'm just wired into it and have been a little thoughtless; I'll do something :) After I wrote my question and posted it I realised a lot of ppl here have their CPUs going 100% on testing and a little blip could throw it all off and potentially waste a lot of time.

Here is partial result of IDEA session. I use Stockfish 6 and 21May2015 Development version. Positive IDEA score is better for white and negative is better for black. The highlighted text in notation are the actual moves in the game.
MVL here played e5 which is best according to IDEA.

Position after 9. d3. Here MVL played 9.... Nc6 which is probably not optimal, according to IDEA the best move is 9... Bg4.
