Trying to Find Reason to Get Komodo 9.0, ChessBase recipe

Post by fern »

I play mostly dedicated units.
Engines beats me since ever, from 250 in the rating list to the first.
I already have some CB products, Fritzes and Juniors...
The price is somewhat high.

Now...
..what a reason should I have to purchase the bloody thing?

I hope you will convince me...

The six months of premium access online to Playchess.com is the only other reason I can think of. I just upgraded to Chessbase 13. Like you I was on the fence about it.

Pity it is not a reason for me. I do not play human creatures... :-)

I do not do that, too...
You see, i am a weird kind of bird that likes chess but not the chess games of other people.
I cannot imagine something more boring that to look a chess game even if it is played by God in person....

So...

Looks like no reasons to purchase regards

I don't use Chessbase but I do play against Komodo. At depth set to 1 ply I beat Komodo 9 games out of 10 BUT if I slip up Komodo takes the initiative and is very brutal. Other programs I've played this way don't fightback the way Komodo does, perhaps because they don't have the knowledge programed into their evaluation of the position, which shows at one ply.

In my case when I want to have a chance I just pick up a middle range program of about 2200-2300 Elo.
The idea of stultifying the program in a way or another does not like me very much. It is like to win at Poker with just a pair because you have a gun over the table...

Sales of Komodo send a donation to Don's widow.
I do not know for certain that the Chessbase version does (for sure with direct sales).
You might want to check.

I find entertainment watching Komodo play against other high end engines, analyzing difficult positions, and beating my brains out.

But as you know, your actual mileage may vary.

You have given me a reason to purchase as much I had lot of affection for Don and certainly his widows could need every cent....

The metaphor of the mileage -US recipe?- I do not understand.

In the US, there are lots of advertizements for automobiles where they make claims like:
37 Miles Per Gallon highway driving and 32 MPG city driving.[*][/b]

And the asterisk says:

[*] Your actual mileage may vary.

The reason your actual mileage may vary is that they have trained experts who know how to get the last drop out of a gallon of gas drive the cars and nobody will really get something quite as good as they claim.

So it becomes a common joke whenever you describe something in a positive way because you like it, to say:

YMMV.

which is short for "Your Mileage May Vary"

The meaning is basically, "I liked this thing and think it is good, but it may not be your cup of tea or it may not perform as well for you as it did for me."
