Any GUI that can handle this? Hexagon chess board

Post by reflectionofpower »

Any GUI that can handle this or program? I am assuming an engine would have to be configured to handle this like Fischer Chess.

It would not surprise me if H.G.Muller has given Winboard this ability. If not yet, then give him time. Otherwise, Oh well.

Hello Ted,

I had exactly the same thought!

Do you use Winboard?

Just curious, as a die hard fan myself...

Later.

I know he has different variants and he was the first one that came to mind when I first thought of this setup but it is not there yet.

Capa probably would have embraced it. I would figure that the promotion would be the last row and that is slightly curved like a smile. This would be more of a challenge as you might have to contend with more than one promotion or square.

I counted 9 Chinese GM's in the top 100 from FIDE. I know that they play Shogi,Xiangqi, maybe some GO to. I know Emmanuel Lasker did while prepping for a World Championship matches.

In my opinion I believe that playing different variants of chess, strategy games would enhance your chess as it would make you think a little differently as far as attacking, defense & strategy and this to some degree would stretch the boundaries of your current chess horizons.

Funny that there are no Japanese GM's although I know from a CB article that ere are some very strong GO players who are in the 2300-2500.

Hi Roger,

Yes, I use Xboard on my Linux machines and I have used Winboard on my Windows machines from time to time as well.

I believe this is called Gliński's hexagonal chess. Tord once made a program to play like this, basically a brother to Glaurung :) The name of his site even included the program, called Scatha, but it is no longer on www.glaurungchess.com. But not to despair completely, there is some info in the old CCC archives for instance, you can Google that and I even found that the official Stockfish site offers some support from the master himself. It looks like you will have to invoke some compiling skills though from somewhere, or even programming skills to write a user interface around Tord's code.
Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

I did find one called Hexodus:
