Paleo computer chess

Post by sje »

I learned Unix back in the 1970s using a Digital Equipment pdp11/70, and it had a chess program written by Ken Thompson early in that decade. This was to be expected, as the two real reasons for developing Unix were chess and SpaceWar.

If you missed out on those glory days, you've now got a second chance. Point your browser to http://pdp11.aiju.de/ and follow the instructions to have a pdp11 emulation running on your system via JavaScript.

After you boot Unix, type:

Code: Select all

/usr/games/chess
which will appear in upper case.

The program uses coordinate notation. Good luck!
