What improvements are in mind for komo and SF? (after TCEC)

Post by S.Taylor »

Firstly, i must admit I'm still almost computer illiterate.
I also admit that my main recent chess experience has been mostly TCEC as well as positions i read about in some books without an actual chess set in front of me to move the pieces around.

But i HAD once been around master level so i appreciate good chess very much.

What I am asking is,
What improvements might we soon see, above the chess level we recently saw in tcec season 8?

I'm sure SF is desperate to make some corrections and improvements.

But how about Komodo? It seems to be doing very well and has some stupendous positional knowledge, but now that it got great results in long TC games like in TCEC, is it now going to take a time out, like Rybka did once or twice, because it seemed to be sure of being good enough without upgrades, for a long time?

I hope not. I HOPE the Komodo team will improve all its weaknesses and lacks of strength or stagnations in various positions.

Both Komodo and Stockfish are under permanent improvement. There is a post by Larry in the main forum on changes from 9.2 to 9.3, so that might give you an idea on what is being done by the K team. As to SF it seems more or less clear that some tweaks to the eval function are needed, to incorporate more chess knowledge.

I've seen this now.
So surely komodo was GREAT in tcec superfinals. But there is still a lot to be done and this might be the beginning of a new level, like above the top of one mountain but near the bottom of a much higher mountain (for those who have seen what i'm talking about, like perhaps in Switzerland).

So i would say komodo has begun the final mountain.

But is it going to get further than this any time soon?

The perfect chess engine will be merely a database with all perfect moves to all moves possible. Until then, Komodo and Stockfish can be improved indefinitely. If nothing else, hardware will increase which will only push chess engine development to new heights.
