another acorn...

Post by MikeB »

just compiled the the most recent versions of crafty and stockfish, and as I occasionally do , have them play under xboardwith no book just to see how they do - so this was the first game with Crafty playing the white pieces versus the latest SF...

Bxh2 looks strange.. crafty winning is even more odd.... wouldn't trust this game with a 10 foot pole.

SF bug here is real.

In singlePV mode, SF-dev need 25.3 MN (D=22/38) to realize real eval of Bxh2 as +1.46, not -1.05

In multiPV mode (multi=3+) SF-dev need only 8.7 MN (D=18/31) to realize real eval of Bxh2 as +1.46, not -0.90

For some reason in singlePV mode SF need D+4 to find 15. Kg3!

13. .. Bxh2, SF-dev
D=20/37, 10 625 kN
-0,87 14.Kf1 Ne4 15.Nxe4 dxe4 16.Rxe4 Qg5
-1,09 14.Kxh2 Ng4+ 15.Kg1 Qxg5 16.Qf3 Nge5
-1,26 14.Kh1 Bf4 15.Bxf6 Qxf6 16.Qh5 h6

D=21/37, 19 379 kN
+1,51 14.Kxh2 Ng4+ 15.Kg3 Qxg5 16.f4 Qe7
-0,77 14.Kf1 Ne4 15.Nxe4 dxe4 16.Rxe4 Qg5
-1,09 14.Kh1 Bf4 15.Bxf6 Qxf6 16.Qh5 h6

Reason for this behaviour is enormosly low eval -6.04 which is immediately assigned to Kg3, so this PV is heavily pruned and make SF to believe Bxh2 is good move.
Maybe this is related to latest King-Tropism patches
1/1 -6,04 15.Kg3
1/1 -3,29 15.Qxg4 Bxg4 16.Bxh7+ Kh8
1/1 -0,87 15.Kg1 Qxg5
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
2/2 -6,04 15.Kg3 Qxg5
2/2 -3,29 15.Qxg4 Bxg4
2/2 -0,87 15.Kg1 Qxg5

To defend SF, Komodo-10 has the same "bug"
5 -2,84 15.Qxg4 Bxg4 16.Nxh7 Re8 17.Kg1
5 -1,22 15.Kg3 Qxg5 16.f4 Qh6 17.Rh1
5 -0,57 15.Kg1 Qxg5 16.Qf3 Nge5 17.Qe3 Qxe3
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
6 -3,01 15.Qxg4 Bxg4 16.Nxh7 Re8 17.Kg1 Re6
6 -0,57 15.Kg1 Qxg5 16.Qf3 Nge5 17.Qe3 Qxe3
6 +1,17 15.Kg3 Qxg5 16.f4 Qd8 17.Rxe6 Nh6
in singlePV take much more D
09- -1,13 15.Kg1 Qxg5
09- -1,19 15.Kg1 Qxg5 16.Qf3 Nce5 17.Bxe5 Nxe5
10+ -1,11 15.Kg1 Qxg5 16.Qf3
10+ -1,04 15.Kg1 Qxg5 16.Qf3
10- -1,11 15.Kg1 Qxg5
10+ -0,94 15.Kg3 Qxg5 16.f4
10+ -0,79 15.Kg3 d4 16.Nxe6
10+ -0,57 15.Kg3 Qxg5 16.f4
10+ -0,24 15.Kg3 Qxg5 16.f4
10+ +0,25 15.Kg3 d4 16.Nxe6
10+ +0,98 15.Kg3 d4 16.Nxe6
10+ +1,72 15.Kg3 Qxg5 16.f4 Qe7 17.Qxg4 Bxg4
11- +1,65 15.Kg3 Qxg5
as for 13. .. Bxh2, Komodo need much less, in single PV only 0.49 MN (D=12)
12+ 354k +0,35 13. ... Bxh2+ 14.Kxh2
12- 490k -0,14 13. ... Re8 14.Nxe6 Rxe6
in multiPV=3 a bit more 0.79 MN (D=12)

Rybka-4 resolve it instantly (0.033 MN from clean Hash)

your comment is unfounded , if you play enough games, Crafty will score some wins against SF or K

Also SF 073016-y (Mac exe and source) will be released soon, it incorporates the updated tb code by Ronald and will now play endgames where it is hitting the tb's more quickly, about 10x faster

Whether you are a SF fan or Crafty fan (I'm a fan of both - all engines really) - this game is very interesting for a 15 sec /0.25 sec inc game. Played under xboard , which is nice since it captures the evaluations. TCEC fans should recognize the opening from last year's TCEC final.

40 games were played in total - a 10% score against the latest SF is very respectable - doubt if many GM's could do that...
