Weird coordinates on board in K vs. K (1990) video

Post by reflectionofpower »

This is my second time watching this excellent documentary on the K vs. K (1990) Lyon match. Both K's individually assess key moves in the match with the commentator. Its quality is VHS so don't expect the world.

Here's what struck me as weird. Look at the coordinates of the board?? This is a still from the video.

Why is like this??

Coordinates are correct.
The numbers and letters are simply oriented toward the spectators.

IMHO, it's not a good view point. I prefer to see from white or black side.

ok, that makes sense. I knew I was having some brain farts. I agree with you on the viewpoint although most people don't need the coordinates or have them situated correctly as long as the white square is at the right of a player.

It's not just the coordinates that are messed up. The board is oriented to have a dark square on the right. White on the right and queen on her own colour, guys!

No. Turn the whole board by 90 degrees and you'll see that everything is correct. White pieces move from left to right and black pieces from right to left. Imagine a camera placed to the right of the while player.

I was always spatially challenged. Probably explains why I am such a terrible player.

The picture is taken from the SIDE / edge of the board, not from the black or white perspective. Totally screwed up photo, but the ranks/files are labeled correctly, but the person that did this was pretty wacky...
