FCP: Development of a new opening book started!

Post by Frank Quisinsky »

Hi there,

after my "FCP Rating List" I started now the development of a new opening book. I have enough game material and started the new project with a basic database from around 140.000 equal positions undo move 12. Included is a 10 site documentation in German language (*.docx, *.doc, *.pdf, *.rtf) with history information about my old FCP Live Book and the ideas I have for the new book development.

I think I need around 9-12 months for that new project.
10 engines have to analyze later later around 40.000 of the positions with 1-minute per game and 4 Cores + 4x Hyperthreading.

If you like you can download the files (Again: Documentation is in German language only ... if I am ready I hope of a good English translation).

http://www.amateurschach.de/download/bo ... a-v1.2.zip (at the moment ~ 3.9Mb).

Alpha phase ... if I am in Beta phase you can download all from my website too in a new selection!

Hi Juan,

I produced 312.550 games ... with the idea to create the opening book I like. Now I have enough games and the next step will follow.

To create a new rating list ... from this one I have really enough.

To many interesting topics.

GUI development, protocol development many others.
In much of them I invested a lot of time.

At the moment:
The opening book is main topic and as second Wasp ... will be start soon too (more helps for John).

You have to know ...
One time computer chess ... Computer chess for ever.
Most of us have the same problem ... :-)

Hi there,

now I have the positions I like (87.417). All in *.pgn and the end positions in *.epd. The analysing phase with 10 top engines can start (blunder correction).

Documentation in German language about the way to create that is at the moment 17 pages long (Office 365, Word 2003, PDF and RTF format).

With the idea to create now a perfect database for opening books for engine testing, tournaments and so one. Database based to 92% on 312.500 engine games on i7 4.3 Ghz Hardware I produced with a three years long time work on my FCP Live Book and x optimations.

Have fun with the material (around 10.2 Mb).
Link to that work can be found on my start page.

Thanks again for the wonderful tools by Norm Pollock and all the work Ferdinand do for us with his additional tools (available in my download selection too).

And to Norm:
I have it ... my biggest problem ... to create the *.epd file.
I wrote a lot of it in my documentation.

One engine need with 30 seconds per position around 30 days for a blunder correction. 10 engines will analyse all that material. Around each 30 days are updates available. The TOP 4 with Komodo, Stockfish, Houdini and Shredder and 6 others completly different in playing style will be analyse the material. But each programmer can do that (if they like) with the basis I created in a long time.

Hi Brendan,

my main work is done.
The next parts have the engines again to do.
I am for the next parts only the slave of engines.

After all the years computerchess ...

Never an opening book is good enough for me. And I checked a lot. In most of cases are not all ECO codes included, the same lines again and again (not enough of the spectrum from A00-E99). So I have to try to make it better (for that where I need). A lot of bad lines are included in many of commercial or free available books. But I found out that we have many good book creators, if I am looking more in free available opening books. Today are many of such books available. But the most are Fritz books. More or less today I don't like the book concempt from ChessBase. To collect games for better book stats is in my opinion an old way. To check that what I included in the book with all the strong engines we have is much better in my opinion. OK, a lot of work but all what we do is a lot of work.

Hundrets of Mb are unnecessary stats (in ChessBase books). The same results can be create with 1% of file size.

OK, the Hiarcs book is really good (from the commercials). Also Ed Schröder created nice things around opening books for chess engines. Many persons have nice ideas. PGN Random Option was one of my own ideas in the past (in Arena development times).

All isn't important today!
I will have a perfect database in *.pgn for opening books / for eng-eng testing or tournaments. Not more not less ...

Thanks for your interest and nice words!

Best
