Chess Informant Books

Post by AdminX »

Hey Michael,

I just wrapped up a 10 game LTC match between Komodo 10.3 and Houdini 5.01. The time control being '40 Moves in 120 Min; 20 Moves in 60 Min; Rest in 60 Min'. I gave Komodo your Chess Informant Book (books.bin), and let Houdini use Deep Shredder 13 default Shredder Book (Shredder13.bkt). The test was small, but I had decent results.

At the end of 10 games the result was 5.5 - 4.5 (10: +1, =9, -0) in favor of Komodo. I know the the books were intended for use with Crafty, but justed wanted you to know it also did well with Komodo. Below is the only win from the match.

PS: Swap Sides was enabled and the Shredder GUI was used.

I was stuck by the following knight maneuver of Houdini in the opening phase on move 11, where Houdini felt it was worth 3 tempo bring it's knight to e5.

Sorry Ted, Komodo cannot possibly use Crafty books.bin, it was not coded to use the book. I believe the GUI book or K's book must gave been active. Interesting game nonetheless.

Hey Ted,

I can come in here with a coach's perspective on the matter.

There are a few important features of the position you posted.

1. Queens are already exchanged, so tempo isn't important anymore (an opposite castling pawn storm race is out of the question and attacks on the king quite unlikely)

2. In Sicilian structures (even Scheveningen structures with pawn on d6 and e6) the e5 square is quite a useful pivot point for knights hopping to the useful c4 square, while also keeping the option of defending the kingside.

3. While in a Scheveningen the knight might goto e5 from f6 (via a Nf6-d7-e5 maneuver), here in this Paulsen structure, Houdini likes the idea of leaving the pawn on d7 where it doesn't block the f8 bishop, but also retains the possibility of going to d5 in one move at some point.

The main point is that with the queens off, the position of the pieces gains a lot more importance over dynamic imbalances like tempo, initiative etc.

Hope that helps. :)
