Interesting. From the FEN Nebiyu prints you can see it thinks there is a piece called 'L' on b8. When the opponent moves this piece like it is a Knight, Nebiyu complains this is an illegal move.

Funny enough Mighty Lion Chess does have a pice on b1/b8 called a Lion (and otherwise the normal FIDE setup). So it seems Nebiyu thinks it is playing Mighty Lion here. Except that a Lion can move as a Knight,so b8-c6 should not be illegal for it.

It looks like the game definition of "variant normal" (which should be inside the alien.ini file) is corrupted somehow.

Nebiyu Alien 1.46 https://sites.google.com/view/minishogi ... ebiyualien crashes on Arena and WinBoard just after a few moves; (first game) - game 2 to 10: no moves are executed.

Was it designed to play normal chess or only variants?

Well, there is Nebiyu(Chess) and NebiyuAlien and only the first plays chess.

Well, NebiyuAlien is configurable to play almost anything. And normal Chess should certainly be within its capabilities. In the alien.ini file I got with Nebiyu 1.45 there certainly is a definition for 'variant normal'. (There is no 'L' piece in that definition, though.)

I must admit that I never understood what exactly the differences between NebiyuAlien and NebiyuChess are. The latter also plays a great many Chess variants. They seem to be hard-coded in it, however. And none of those are games with piece drops.

Daniel compiled 7! different versions for variants and for an ordinary user who just wants to play chess with it,
it should be sufficient to grab the specific one, which is still 1.45 (though released two times).

The only one updated again later was the Alien version in 2013-11 to 1.46.

Indeed, Nebiyu is a general game-playing system. Most of the special versions are not for chess variants (Checkers, Go, Amazons, Hex, Reversi). There seems to be overlap between NebiyuAlien and NebiyuChess, though, as these both handle Chess variants. One difference is that NebiyuAlien is configurable for what it plays, through the alien.ini file. It is not clear to me whether with the proper configuration NebiyuAlien would become fully equivalent to NebiyuChess. (If it was, there seems to be no reason for the existence of NebiyuChess.)

BTW, I just figured out what the problem with NebiyuAlien is:
by default (i.e. after 'new', without receiving a 'variant' command) it will play the first variant defined in the alien.ini file. This used to be Shogi, but in the corrected ini file for v1.47 Mighty Lion Chess was put before that. In both cases it is unsuitable for playing normal Chess in a GUI, as although the alien.ini file contains the definition, it has to be selected by a command 'variant normal', which CECP GUIs would never send.

Possible fix: move the definition of 'variant normal' to before that of 'variant lion' in the alien.ini file.

Mighty-Lion Chess is relying on a new feature of NebiyuAlien, namely multi-leg moving, which does not seem to fully work yet. Which explains why it rejected the Lion move in the posted transcript.
