Don't think you should count a queen that pins a piece or am I wrong. For instance Qh5 pinning pawn f7 is usually a bad move in the opening.
Or perhaps only count them in middle or end game.
And if you assign a too small bonus it is not worthwhile.
Problem with scoring pins is that you don't know how easy it is to unpin. For instance playing Nf6 or g7-g6 may be enough to unpin.

white queen h5, black king e8, black pawns f7,g7, black knight g8.Henk wrote:Don't think you should count a queen that pins a piece or am I wrong. For instance Qh5 pinning pawn f7 is usually a bad move in the opening.

-queen pin on f7 pawn
- g7-g6 pawn push threat
- Ng8-f6 knight threat (knight file = queen file -1 || queen file +1 && knight rank = queen rank + 3 || queen rank -3 || thousand more similar distnace considerations)
with the heat wave coming closer, I am not certain pins are the biggest concern.
I would concentrate more on skewers and associated meats.

Ok skewers are more promising. Although there are cases that less valuable piece is poisoned. How often do you capture a rook on a1 or h1 and few moves later you are check mated. Or capture a pawn on b2 with a rook and rook is trapped after Bb3 and Na4.
Already wasted two days on implementing pins.

Re: Queen that pins
Pins tend to give something (little) diminishing something the mobility of the pinned piece. But the effect in elo is outside the typical goals of young engines.

because pins involve deeper tactics, and engines with basic search will have hard time making use of them.cdani wrote:Pins tend to give something (little) diminishing something the mobility of the pinned piece. But the effect in elo is outside the typical goals of young engines.
I guess pins should get pretty high values, a major term for me, unless search sees it all without eval indications.
very frequent, with high values, how could pins not be scored or bad?

This pin would be worse if pawns were on d6 and h5
