I have posted a few general comments and issues on my blog:
https://arasanchess.org/blog.shtml
Regarding the games: I haven't done a deep analysis but following is a recap and some brief comments.
The first round Arasan had Black matched with zurichess. Arasan equalized out of the opening, later won a pawn, and put a nice positional squeeze on zurichess to win the game.
The next game was with Wasp. The opening was a fairly boring Semi-Slav. Arasan built up some advantage but something went very strange. Between moves 36 and 59, Arasan's score went up to over +3, which does not seem justified. Then it abruptly started dropping, again for no discernible good reason. At move 74 suddenly it dropped again, to -2.85, and stayed there for the rest of the game. That looks like a bug. Note that as described in the blog, Arasan's effective contempt factor was wrong for this and the other games in day 1, but the other games didn't have weird scores like this.
3rd round was Black against Tinker. Arasan got nothing from the opening and quickly drew. Qxc4 here was an error according to the Hiarcs book:
[d] r1b2rk1/2qnbppp/pp1p1n2/4p3/P1Q1P3/2N1BN2/1PP1BPPP/R4RK1 b - - 0 12
but that is what most engines seem to want to play.
4th round was against The Baron. The opening was a Catalan. Arasan's scores soon started dropping a bit, but Stockfish thinks it was never in any danger and it soon converted into an equal endgame, which was drawn.
5th round game was with Telepath. Telepath played a Gruenfeld variant. Stockfish thinks it went wrong here:
[d] r2qr1k1/pNn2p1p/2p3p1/3p4/1PP5/b3PQ1P/4BPP1/3R1RK1 b - - 0 17
by playing Qb8 instead of Qd7. But Black was still in the game and had an outside passer. However, that passer was later lost and then it had to play a pawn-down endgame with no compensation, and lost.
6th round Arasan had a bye. 7th round was against Nightmare and was another short draw. The contempt issue was probably a factor here, I think. Arasan might have not played so readily into a draw if its rating had been accurate.
Next round Arasan was matched with Komodo. Komodo played the French but Arasan avoided the interesting variation it had tried against some other programs (1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. e5 Nfd7 5. f4 c5 6. Nf3 Nc6 7. Be3 Rb8). Arasan went instead for 4. Bg5. It it was equal coming out of the opening and actually did not seem to go wrong until move 32:
[d] 2r2rk1/2b2p1p/2b1p1p1/2NnR3/3P4/1P1B4/2K2PPP/2Q5 w - - 0 32
Here Arasan played Re2, which runs into Nf4 (better was Re1). Arasan hung on but it wound up with four isolated pawns, and gradually succumbed.
On Sunday Arasan was first matched with Goldbar and that game was a very boring QGD. Arasan drifted into being somewhat worse. For a long time there was a lot of shuffling around, with this position at move 51 being typical:
[d] 1r6/p3rb1R/B1pn1kp1/1pNp1p2/3P1P2/PP2PP2/3K4/R7 w - - 0 51
White has managed to get the Bishop trapped, but Black can't actually take it because it is defended. And in turn Black's bishop has almost no mobility. I thought Arasan was worse but it is hard to see how either side can make progress from here.
Eventually the position became less locked but simplifications took it into an equal endgame, which was drawn after over 150 moves.
Next round Arasan was matched with gogobello, I think a new Italian engine. gogobello played an inferior line of the Najorf Poisioned Pawn (with 10. Be2) and was crushed.
Round 11 Arasan had White against DeltomateX. After a completely equal opening, Stockfish thinks Deltomate went wrong here:
[d] 2r1r1k1/pp3p1p/5p2/8/3QP3/5PPb/1P2B2P/6K1 b - - 0 30
Deltomate had to play .. Kg7 but instead went for Rc2. And although that looks like a reasonable move, Arasan was soon able to mount a winning attack on the king side.
Round 12 Arasan was matched with Chiron and was doing worse for most of the game, eventually defending a pawn-down endgame. As mentioned in the blog Arasan disconnected twice in the endgame due to program crashes. I am still not certain what the issue is, but looks like it may be related to tb access. I switched to a dual Xeon Linux system for the remainder of the game and it was able to draw. This was a good result because Chiron was running on 30 cores and is a strong program.
The last round Arasan won against BertaX. Berta played the Ruy Lopez Berlin. Arasan was able to break through on the Queen side, creating a passed pawn, and later a couple more.
I think the key position is here:
[d] 8/bpp1kr2/p1p1p1np/P3P1p1/1P4R1/5NPP/1BP2PK1/8 b - - 0 28
where Deltomate played Rf5. Correct is Rf8, because the Rook is needed on the back rank for defense against the White passers. Another example where one missing tempo is everything.
