Generalization of chess

Post by Uri Blass »

In chess there are 8 ranks and 8 files.

The simplest generalization is having different number of ranks that is at least 4(ignores ranks 5-8 and I simply do not know how to post diagrams without them but assume they are not part of the board)

4 ranks is mate in 1 in normal chess
[d]8/8/8/8/rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/PPPPPPPP/RNBQKBNR w KQ - 0 1

gxf3# or exf3#(there is no rank 5 that the black king can escape)

It may be interesting to find how many FRC positions in 8*4 are winning for white and next step is to do the same for a board that is 8*5

Rules are the usual rules
In 8*4 pawn can in theory promote in the first move but there is no enpassent capture
For example here g3g1Q is a legal move:
[d]8/8/8/8/rnbqkb1r/pppppNpP/PPPPPn1P/RNBQKB1R b KQ - 0 2

In 8*5 or bigger boards there is enpessant capture for both sides.

Try this:
[d]rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/PPPPPPPP/RNBQKBNR w KQ - 0 1
