GPU recommendation.

Post by cma6 »

Given that buying a GPU now is a horror show, what would experts recommend for a new build?
I won't be doing any lc0 computing.
Current card it Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost, which I'm happy with in terms of resolution and ports.

Price is definitely an obstacle. I'm looking for functionality of my current 650Ti.

In that case purchase the cheapest ==>

Or the Best for a much higher Price ==>

I would advice to buy a used card. And not x050 but 70 or 80 instead.

Why buying a GPU at all? The new AMD Ryzen 7 5700G has an integrated GPU that is more powerful than your old one.

For my office machine 1 to 2 TFLOPs and 2 GB VRAM are sufficient, I can also play old game titles with 2K from the 2000s, the new integrated GPUs on CPUs from Intel/AMD/Apple are in the 1 to 2 TFLOPs range, as discrete, used, low-end graphics cards I can recommend the Nvidia GTX 750 and AMD Radeon HD 7750, both in the ~50$ range, worth to mention - Windows 11 will require DX12 capable hardware, and of course - professional workloads require pro GPUs.

***edit***
And beware of GPU scams from some Asian dealers on eBay.

Wow - very impressive for £325 - link!

I'm guessing that would be good enough to give Leela a "reasonable" amount of processing power, right?

"Windows 11 will require DX12 capable hardware"
I assume this means that before upgrading to Win 11, I will have to upgrade my Geforce 650 Ti to a GPU that is DX12 capable?

OK, that is the key point. Here is the list of AMD GPUs that are DX12 capable.

I don't think so because AMD has totally missed the boat of using GPUs for ML. That's an Nvidia-only ecosystem. However, the OP didn't want to use Lc0, that's why the 5700G is a valid option.
