Macbook pro/air options for chess

Post by h1a8 »

Im thinking about getting my first MacBook. Either this year's m1 chip version or next year m2 chip version (both arm). What are my best chess options for analysis, engine matches, etc. (i prefer to use komodo 2.5 and latest developmental stockfish).

I would love it if i can get fritz interface to work.

Does Wine run on the Mac? If so, you can get Fritz 11 to work. That's the version I've owned for a bazillion years now (since 2007), and I can just install it using Lutris (which is basically a Wine prefix manager and launcher menu for Linux). I don't know about any newer Fritz interfaces because I don't own them.

I've heard good things about Chess Explorer:

I don't have any experience with it though.

(Why do all these chess related websites look as if they've not been updated for 20 years?)

This is not a typical mac (with intel or amd processor). It has an arm chip and may not be compatible with some programs.

Does anyone have any experience with m1 macs?

Free Software:
Banksia GUI
ChessX
Scid vs PC
cutechess for engine matches or c-chess-cli

Payed Software:
Hiarcs Chess Explorer (is based on ChessX sourcecode)

Install Windows in a virtual machine (Parallels is good) and run any Windows software on your Mac

So these programs work on the m1 chip (arm instructions)? I heard rumors that virtual machine software still doesn't address the arm vs x86 incompatibility. Wanted someone with m1 experience to comment before I decide to buy.

Buy the M1X this month.
+BanksiaGUI
Everything is playable on the M1X in ultra mode.
And you can use every program.
