There's not much there yet. Although the new personalities might be interesting. If I search the old CDs, I might find 5000, 5500, 6000. If the drive will load it...
They're old programs, but it wouldn't be quite right to put them as abandonware somewhere for download, would it?
Chessmaster's weakness, though, is that the books are too short. That's when I usually find that a given setting plays the same thing over and over, which annoys me. And the Sicilian, for example, where the engine runs out of book after 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cd4 4.Nxd4 and the engine takes Nxd4 by its own power is also not the best, it's already a position on the edge of winning.

Among the good things I remember about Chessmaster (please correct me if I'm wrong):

* of of the first to have a chess tutorial: available everywhere now - but wasn't at the time. I even remember that the tutorial ran too quickly on my computer because it seemed to be using the general computer clock, not a clock based on seconds and minutes

* among the first to have really good looking boards
Human chess is partly about tactics and strategy, but mostly about memory

Very nice, Wilhelm. :)

Cock de Gorter used to be the biggest Chessmaster fan, and ran games and rating lists right up until when he died a few years ago.

If you want to know anything about Chessmaster, I'm your person. However, I had never heard about the "tutorial running too fast" issue, particularly since they use audio so I can't see how that's possible.

Several other sites have various versions of CM available for download, and Ubisoft clearly has "abandoned" the franchise. So I don't think anybody will complain.

The CM series definitely had some unavoidable weaknesses, one of them being the books, which were just thrown together based on stats from various PGN files of GM games that we had. Another was the database, which used the TASC software and, due to the way it used memory, could only have about 500K games in a DB.

A lot of people also complained about the copy protection on the discs that Ubisoft forced us to use. But we (the development team) couldn't do anything about that.

Thanks Graham :)
Oh yeah, Cock was and is unbeatable. One new setting per month? :)
Sadly he passed away in the time where I was not active and when I come back he was one of the first adresses where I want to look what is new. I was realy shocked as I read he is never by us.
Do you know what his last best setting are?

cheers Wilhelm

I have found the following from Cock:
Hi Graham,

The best 5 CM XI settings according to my list playing.

Everytime I expect a disastrous result for Isildur II or 8777. Till now it did not happen. Both played more than 230 games and have a big lead on the others.
8777 is almost a copy of the very old CM 8777 setting.

Thanks, I have a question. Are the personalities in CM9-10-11 all the same values or are they adapted to the versions? I only have CM11 installed at the moment. I plan to do a tourney with them. I ever want to do this but never had the time for it. I have a set of them for outside use but I'm not sure if they are realy from CM11.
Did I remember right that you made a Kasparov setting? I didn't have it and want to include it.
If you have any idea what could be important on my site I'm open for it.

one more question: as I remember I had a little program where you can easily made settings for use in- and outside of CM. I would like to put it on the site but I didn't have it anymore and can't find it on the net. Anyone has it?
