Thanks.

I had some testing time with Hydra and spoke to Chrilly about it.
Both testing and talking to him indicated quite a different rating - he said 3100 elo.

I read around 3000 elo and took a engine with 2970 elo but I have overlooked that this was with 4 threads :)
The primary goal was simply to remember this remarkably engine. Maybe I will take a new one in one of the next updates.

The 3100 elo was near the end of Hydra's time, i.e. a much stronger version than at the beginning of the project. I spoke with Chrilly in London during the Adam's match since we had only communicated by email up to then. I asked him if the 5.5 / 6 score was what he expected and he said "yes. Once we get our position it's hopeless [for the human]." By that I think he meant as long as the position isn't blocked, the human is toast.
"What do you reckon it's elo is?", I asked
"About 3100 elo" he said, nodding confidently.

I kept the tactical test positions and timings I'd used to test it and nothing could touch it until Rybka 3 on a 12 core (dual 6 core Westmere Xeon CPUs overclocked to 4.2 GHz) appeared, which was about equal to Hydra tactically and probably stronger in actual play. One rumour I heard was that the Hydra project was discontinued because of the success of Rybka.

Then the Rybka Cluster came along which left everything in the dust. I tested the 140 core and 188 core versions and they were remarkable.
But as Houdini got stronger, Rybka did not. Houdini 3 appeared with a very cool tactical mode and on the same 12 core machine it was the equal of the Rybka Cluster both in playing strength and tactically.

The good old days...
