Problem with LC0.

Post by Rubinus »

Anyone know why it stopped working for me? Version 0.28.0 worked without any problems. Version 0.28.2 played six games last night. And now it's restarting my laptop after a few minutes. And reverting to version 0.28.0 didn't help, it reboots too.

How do you know that Lc0 0.28.2 was causing those reboots? Was it the GPU version?

Because other times it won't restart. I tried 0.28.2, played six games on the first day, it's been crashing ever since, going back to 0.28.0 didn't help, it worked fine before. Restart even when I drop from the client command line. Yes, it is carrying the GPU CUDNN. Downloaded with libraries. Now I downloaded the blas cpu, that one seems to work, but I will try the match sometime tomorrow. The CUDNN version managed 3-3 against Revenge 2, I'm afraid the blas will be significantly weaker.
Apparently the problem is already in the somewhat worn out hardware, the laptop is 2.5 years old and has not been treated completely gently, frequent transfers and therefore starts. The SSD drive is seen only occasionally, the system was reinstalled on the hdd, so half a year ago, however LC0 worked until 1.1.2022... Maybe the gpu isn't cooling and the system is shutting down, I don't know.

Try the CUDA Lc0, instead of CUDNN. For this, you need to install NVIDIA CUDA Toolkit:
https://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-downloads

And, of course, you have to update the NVIDIA-driver for your GPU. For doing this regularly, I recommend to install Geforce Experience by NVIDIA.

Perhaps a downclocking of the GPU can help, too. For this, use the Afterburner-tool:

Even though I've set Lc0 0.28.2 to usage of one thread, plus turned off multi-gather, when it is on move, CPU usage goes up to 100%.

That shouldn't happen.

No, it's the hardware. It's probably getting too hot. I'm going to get a new laptop anyway, they already have a Legion with 8 cores for a bearable price, so I'll leave this one at home in backup where it can test engines without LC0-GPU endlessly. Computationally, it's still good. Maybe I should buy another cheap hamster with an i5 for casual portability, so I don't torture my best machine with multiple starts every day.

I reinstalled the libraries and within a minute it crashed again and even looked like I wouldn't boot up again, I had to shut it down completely for a few minutes. I won't try it again, the cpu veze DNNL BLAS runs on it and it doesn't seem to be as much weaker as it used to be in the 0.8 days when I stopped testing LC0 completely for two years because it was pointless against the best engines.
LC0 CUDNN - Revenge 3:3, DNNL Blas - Revenge 1.5:2.5.
