Stockfish get too deep and see nothing

Post by Uri Blass »

Arrogant stockfish claims to get depth 104 but still cannot see the draw.
I wonder if some top program can see the draw(it is not the latest developement version but I doubt latest developement version is better)

It's quite stupid to attach a Human characteristic to a chess program, if it's output is wrong (for a 1/1000000 edge case).
Calling it 'arrogant' just leaves the (correct) impression you are biased.

You may be right but I do not like the big depth.
In the past when I analyzed the position I never remember getting this big depth.

Other programs also do not understand the position but at least show smaller depths and I do not like claiming to get very deep if you do not see a forced mate or a forced draw when usually stockfish cannot get depth 100 even after an hour of search(including positions with a big material advantage when it does not see a forced mate).

@Uri, I think the issue here is that you put any weight on the depth. Depth means nothing really, there is not a single engine that reports the correct depth, simply because it doesn't exist. As soon as an engine has quiescent search, it's reported depth loses all it's meaning.

I would argue that the issue is actually in UCI protocol that exposes depth, not with SF

And if you look at the reported analysis, the seldepth is 19, which means at most SF has searched 19 moves ahead which is much lower than the reported 104. What does that mean? it tells you that depth means nothing

seldepth in earlier iteration is bigger so seldepth does not mean the biggest ply SF searched.

depth is at least number of iteration that the engine searched.
seldepth practically clearly means nothing important because it is even not the highest ply the engine searched(I think that it is only the highest ply that it searched in the pv line in the last iteration) and I think that it is better if stockfish stop giving misleading information and do not give seldepth.

Maybe the main line has not a lot of moves because of some information in the hash tables but the engine already got deeper earlier.

Seldepth may be more interesting if it is really the highest ply the engine searched but programmers prefered not to save this information because it is going to make the engine slightly slower that may do it 1 or 2 elo weaker that is not something important for the user but for some reason seems something important to the SF developers.

Actually you are wrong. Seldepth is the highest searched line in the iteration. So it still means something.

And SF cannot just eliminate it, it is part of UCI protocol. Albeit its meaning is not actually defined in the protocol. So programs are free to interpret it the way they want.

Again, can you please explain to me why you are so fixated on the reported depth now you know it is not important and it is implementation detail?

Seldepth is not the highest searched line in the iteration for stockfish.
It is not logical that the engine search for many minutes in the iteration when the highest search line is only 19 plies.

https://boardgamestips.com/faq/what-is-seldepth/

Seldepth is the max depth reached in the search. For some engine it’s calc only for PV nodes, some other calc it over the full tree.
My point is that for stockfish it's calculated only for PV nodes.

You are right about Seldepth, sorry. I thought it is interpreted like what I do in Zahak. As I said, programs are free to interpret it the way they want, and the way SF and Zahak do it, cost exactly the same elo points, "zero". Probably when they decided to only count PV nodes, it had some debugging benefits for them, you can easily suggest a patch to change this:

In this line, remove `pvNode &&` and you will get what you want: https://github.com/official-stockfish/S ... h.cpp#L607

BTW, Zahak after more than some 20 minutes on 14 threads, with depth 55 and seldepth 97 and still thinking it is +12, but it cannot progress at all. Zahak is even more arrogant than SF:

Code: Select all

And what do you want to get changed so it doesn't show that high depths anymore? Divide depth by 3 if depth >= 50 so your high depth bias doesn't get triggered? That'd be a change worthy of Houdini's magical speed up.

BTW: Crystal is very close to 0 in evaluation. You should try it if you need to run engines on such positions.
