For engine tester offer games for download!

Post by Frank Quisinsky »

Hi there,

the chess board have 64 fields.
8 pawns for each site for an second example.

Nothing is new!

:-)

The opening theory have A00-E99 ECO codes.
Again, nothing is new!

If others test engines with ...

- allways the same 30, 50, 100 or 200 (I don't know) positions ...
- opening books, not more as 8 moves or lesser ...

The produced results are more or less a new chess variant and have nothing to do with classical chess.
Easy: The A00-E99 ECO codes are a part of the game chess, same for the 8 pawns for each site for an example.

What I never understand:

Opening books, with a depth from 8 moves never can produced around 75 of 500 ECO codes.
Allways the same openings (30, 50, 100 or 200 positions) have nothing to do with ... all engines should have the same conditions!

If I download and looking in results by others I can also nothing do with such databases.

The next one:
A match between engines ended with mate or draw rules.
And not with -9 and a resign-factor.
For computer chess not logical!

All the endgame problems different engines have, nobody can see.

Best
Frank

Why I wrote that?
At the moment I have a discussion with a very strong chess player about it (will not give the name of the GM).
And he told me, if he is searching computer chess games most what he found are computer chess with own rules or chess-variants. It would be much more interesting to get material from all the available opening systems. I do that since years, maybe others will follow. Hm, I got from him also a red-card. I should test engines with a time-control humans used for chess tournaments. That is indeed a problem if the time management for different engines with Fischer controls is not perfect.

Hi there,

I am very happy about his comments.
More or less strong chess players are searching (looking for) computer chess games for the own opening training.

That is really a success computerchess have if the most critical gaming phase for chess programs will be now interesting for very strong chess players. I have the opinion we should give and collected chess games with all A00-E99 opening systems and longer time controls.

Maybe a new idea to collect the games on a new site.
Should be a lot of work, I know ...

Hi Graham,

I know that and gave the hint to CCRL yesterday.

:-)

Unfortunately, the only one I can give him.

Hi Graham,

Norm Pollock have to tool to split a PGN for such a list of ECO codes.

Later (need more games for do it to) I will offer such a site.
In the past I have the games for each engine in such a list (FCP Rating List).
But this is interesting for programmers only (a hand full used it), not for chess players.

Keep up the strong work around CCRL!

Cheers, Frank.

We all play a part in the big picture.

I'm sometimes amazed by the tasks that you take on though, due to the enormous amount of time, effort and resources involved.

I wish that Norm Pollock and Dann Corbit were still around in Talkchess.

Hi Graham,

To go through life more continuously is better as things I do.
Same for computerchess.

To many things around chess I have interest and the reason I never work continously on one topic, like a News Page or Arena, other things around chess. That's what I admire on your work (my weaknesses) and your strong point.

Now what is better for a life ... not around chess only.
More continuity I can give as answere but I go allways the other way.
I don't know why.

I have FEOBOS 2 in my brain.
Need own material for the work.
And before I start FEOBOS 2 I have other things in the brain I like to do ... never I learn here.
That's allways my big problem.

But to one point, to 100% sure ...
Graham and Frank like computer chess.
Not important if I produced often a little chaos!

Best
Frank

PS: My wife told me often ... have a look what John do around programming.
One topic is better for you as to many different things.
