I saw this on Chessbase.com, and there is not doubt that Tani is progressing in skill quite nicely. However what really caught my eye, was my friend who I had not seen in a while Mark Paragua. At the time we met some years back he was a IM so I was happy to see that he is now a GM.

WHAAaT...

Learn the rules, win a New York Championship a year later with 5.5/6, and get your first IM-norm 3 years later at 11.

In short: if you have to STUDY for chess as a kid, years and years in a row to break 1500-1600, you can just as well drop the entire thing because you'll never amount to anything. I started at 7, maybe 8, it took me 8 years of playing (not studying; just playing against other kids) to reach somewhere around ~1850, which was determined by the fact that I could score ~50% against the teacher overseeing the school's chess club, who had an official rating of ~1850, and basically got stuck there for the rest of my life.

I can have peaks of ~2000 Elo when I _really_ apply myself to a game (defeated some ~2000 Elo players in local competitions when I played in a chess club in the late 90's), but I'd be surprised if I ever pass 2100, even if i decide to start studying again. I can see myself reaching ABRSM level 8 on the piano much more easily. (Now I hover at level 4-5; also after a 15 year hiatus.)
