In your opinion which is the Best Chess GUI ?

Post by Chessqueen »

Can you list in your opinion up to 5 reasons or more if you can think of why you pick whichever GUI is the best of all GUI ? Most of this forum member are familiar and use different GUIs Like myself, I use Banksia, Arena, ChessGUI, Lucas, Tarrasch, and I have my personal GUI that I believe is the best based on easy to use less Bugs etc... This is the time for you to select the best GUI and list the reason why you pick one over the others. For instance I can state that i prefer a gui that has all these functions and that is why I chose Arena GUI.

I select the arena Gui because it is able to execute all these functions:-

Must be free and has support for all UCI engines(I have no problem if it supports XBoard as well)
Must be able to read all PGN files correctly
Should have a feature to rate players of a game according to the PGN(like ELOstat in Arena)
Should show that which side is ahead in position, material and overall(2 of them can suffice, I can calculate 3rd myself)(eg. Shredder Android has an overall meter and shows taken and lost material and calculates it after every move)
Must be free(or at least for personal use, or something which has very less security easy to break Laughing)
Support for all UCI engines(I have no problem if it supports XBoard as well)
Must be able to read all PGN files rightly
Should be able to show stats of any move in comparison of best move and in comparison to effect of its moves(eg.1.a4 b5 is a pawn down by effects, while in comparison to ...e5, it is worse)
Should show comments in user friendly way obtained from last mentioned function(eg.It gains 3 points[overall], but is 4 points worse than my suggestion .......) or something easy to understand.
Must be able to add annotations and variations(and signs like !!, ?? etc.) with a kibitzer-like feature.
Can be used to play chess(No problem if no variants)
Should be able to add multiple games in a PGN

ChessGUI because it has all of the features I want to use.

Matthias Gemuh was always happy to add new things as requested, but for the past few years, he and his family have been caught up in the war in Ambazonia.

Depends what you want to use it for.

For engine matches and tournaments, my vote goes to Cutechess GUI. Beautiful simple design and concurrently is a must-have for me for machines with several cores.

For playing 15+10 or faster: Hiarcs
For playing longer games: Fritz 18
For looking at games: Chessbase 16
For computer analysis of opening: Aquarium
For small computer matches in opening I don't find master games: Hiarcs
For computer tournament (mostly to look at level setting): Cutechess

I spend more time on online tools, both for playing, analyzing, and watching games live.

(I also use some apps on tablet, both andoid and iPad)

-it’s the best for running tournaments
-it’s the best for engine matches on Lichess
-it’s the best for infinite analysis
-it’s the best when we are talking about fastest development and answers and improvements and changes and multi languages

No, I use the latest version: https://www.hiarcs.com/chess-explorer-pro.html

I think it would be interesting to know which tools people use for 'daily' training. F.ex. I use Aimchess 40-50 min. for daily exercises, and Chessable for some other stuf. Usualy the same courses I have on books to get easier access to the exercises/drill and the video explaination. Just now I'm working on Hellsten's mastering serie (3 books).

WinBoard / XBoard. Because it already supports almost every imaginable function. And when there is something it doesn't do exactly as you want it, you just modify it so that it does, since it is open source.

I'm not aware of any 'free' programs that are focus on playing, though I'm working on one,I do only programming in the authum so it take time.
The few I have tested, there always something that didn't fit. Either it is impossible to get rid of the eval. Not recording time. Not possible to use Fide time control, not support of DGT board. The playing feature seems to be a left hand job where the main focuse are either on engine matches or some database features. In addition a playing program should make it fun to play, giving rating stat, have personalities etc. The Chess Dojo app. on Android is on the right track but I think I paid a few $ to open up the features that made it fun.
