No, it was an eight game match. Joel held the draw in just two of the eight games, despite also getting White every game. If I recall correctly, Rybka played the Philidor defense (2...d6) 3 times, winning all three of those games. I think Joel drew once against the Pirc or Modern, don't recall the other draw, probably not 1.e4.

That link is to the pawn odds match they played, not the draw and move odds match, which was a separate match at a different date. Both were eight game matches, easy to confuse them.

Eric Hallsworth might have them. I'll ask him.

A superb win by Rybka to take out the match 6-2
Postscript to the match: a few months after losing all three games in this match where Rybka played the Phildor with 3...exd4, which I had prepared for Rybka to use in this match, I was paired against Joel in a tournament, and I had Black. So I played this same Philidor, and after a few more moves Joel agreed to a quick draw with me (this was before I became a GM). But I think it guaranteed him at least a tie for first place, so it wasn't only the opening that was a factor. I think he finished clear first, and I finished third. Now it's pretty clear how to refute this, but in 2008 it wasn't yet so easy to determine what was wrong with it.

Re: Rybka vs GM Joel Benjamin 2008 Draw Odds Match

Post by modolief »

Thanks so much for the help!! I had written down some comments by Vasik Rajlich upon completion of the draw odds match, from 2008-01-08, probably on the Rybka forum:
The main reason for optimism for the human in this format is the theory that humans understand the drawing prospects in a chess position better than computers. There is some decent evidence for this belief, and Benjamin did slightly outperform his rating in this match. In fact, Benjamin performed in this match exactly as Hiarcs 10, Spike 1.2 and fruit 2.2 did in CEGT 40/120 play against Rybka 2.3.2a, drawing and winning at a 25% clip. The programs are already likely to be slightly stronger than the world's strongest human players.
This superiority of the human was demonstrated once in this match, in the fourth game, which was likely the most exciting and interesting from the human point of view. Benjamin made concessions to lock the position and then took the air out of it completely with a piece for two pawns sacrifice which sets up a rather complex fortress which no computer can even remotely understand.
It's this fourth game, in particular, that I want to look at, to see how well the modern engines (or, well, Stockfish at least) can understand this complex fortress.

Hello:

I see that Graham was faster than me but games 2 and 3 are missing... WERE missing! I found a web of Events at Rybka website:

Rybka - for the serious chess player. [ #Computer chess ] [ Events ]

Where 'Rybka vs. GM Joel Benjamin II' match is listed and there are links to Rybka Forum. I was able to find the threads of all the games thanks to the WayBack Machine (once more!):

I copy here the PGNs as they were in the original threads:

Looking into the PGNs, the TC was 90' + 30"/move per side. There is also info about the clock times at the end positions for all the games except Game 4.

Clic on d8 square if you want to get a new window with the full PGN source data in order to copy and save it elsewhere. Enjoy!
