This fortress is rather trivial to detect. The Pawn structure is such that the black King and Bishop are trapped, and with the white King shuttling between g1/g2 there is no entry for the Rook. Even after 2... b3 the sacrifice Rxb4 cxb4 would maintain the King/Bishop confinement.

Evaluation in a position where the Pawn structure recognizes a fortress candidate should, after the ply counter gets above 10 or so, produce a drawish score when the potential 'fortress breaker' (here: the Rook) is still on his own board half (or perhaps even not behind the forward-most white Pawn, i.e. on rank 4-8) biding time. And it should eliminate trapped pieces from the position key used to detect repetitions, to avoid black can dodge the drawish score by parking his Rook on f3 or h3, shuffling the King and Bishop.

Why Crystal does not get to a more drawish eval seems to be mostly because the search explodes, and with 18/182+ after a trillion nodes {!} there does not seem to be any hope of resolving the double singular extensions -I'm just speculating those are inside it may be anything other-, or something like that :?

If you can get to depths higher than 18 I think score will go down 8-) Here it is at -3.30 for White (hash only 7.6%)

Thanks for this position. This is exactly the kind of position that is useful for testing & development. It is not overly complicated, no obscene material imbalance, is not impractical to theoretically resolve, and should be resolved by the program.

All too often I see positions with double digit r50 resets, multiple major piece sacrifices 20+ ply deep, or absurd material configurations. wHy CaNT sTUpiD eNgiNE sOlVe tHiS?

So thank you for providing a reasonable position that highlights a shortcoming in clear and straightforward manner.

BTW, a retrograde analysis of this position should conclude it is a draw after 1. g3 pretty fast. Only two Pawn structures are reachable without capture, and in each of those the white King can only be in 14 locations, the black King in 19, the Bishop in 10, and (to be generous) the Rook everywhere. That makes 2 x 64 x 19 x 14 x 10 = 340,480 positions. Only slightly larger than a 3-men EGT! Of course with only 4 movable pieces it is bound to be similar to a 4-men, even without confinement of the pieces. Building of such an EGT typically takes a fraction of a second.

The main issue is how to score the conversions to a successor EGT. In particular those with other Pawn structure than the relevant two (with the black Pawn on b4 or b3). The obvious assumption would be to declare a white loss when any of the a, c or f-Pawn is missing, black has the move, and the Rook is still on the board. The other Pawns are protected, and we can assume that capture of those would always be answered with a recapture, (so a double conversion), and use the score from the successor after that. Which in this case will always be an EGT without Rook, so effectively a 3-men, with at best a passer on the c-file as a bonus. These 3-men EGT will trivially evaluate to total draws.

The whole thing should perhaps have a 500msec solution time (single-treaded).
