Adding tablebases to Chessbase

Post by Level-4-Lab »

Recently decided to add the 6 piece syzygy tablebases to my chessbase, but it doesn't seem to be working.

I added directory locations for both the dtz and wdl files (totaling about 150 GB) to both the engine and gui paths in Chessbase, but when I test various sample positions it's clear the tablebases aren't being referenced. I did close the program and restart. I'm running Stockfish 15 as the engine, and my program is Chessbase 14. I took some screenshots to show my setup.

Any ideas?

Chessbase was very hesitant and late to support the syzygy tablebases. There are always editions that refuse support, as is currently the case for CB 17.
If you use CB 16 with update 18 it works from my own experience. 8-)

Thanks for your reply!

The fact that there are specific fields for Syzygy TB's in the CB14 interface makes it clear they are supposed to work with it.

I did manage to get it working by adding a separate path to the small 3-4-5 piece Syzygy Tablebase set. I assumed that this was already included in the 6-piece set so didn't add it before. But now that it's there somehow the 6 piece set is working fine and i've tested it with very complex 6-piece positions (mate it 344, etc). The only strange thing now is that the CB online tablebase utility is giving a "solution" with a higher number of moves, so it seems to be less efficient. Here's an example: Image https://ibb.co/z5Cgr5n But as long as my local TB's are working fine I'm happy! When NVME's come down in price a bit and capacities go up to 16+ Terrabytes, I'll probably locally store the full 7-piece set.

I'm not a fan of CB 17. They are watering down the interface to try to capture the young child (mentally-challenged adult) market and now it requires more mouse clicks and screens to do the same thing as the earlier product required, so I definitely won't be upgrading to it. As for 15 and 16, there is no practical different from 14. It's all about your hardware, databases and engines anyway. I have CB 16 running on my laptop and can't tell the difference between 14. This is just a shameless cash grab by the Chessbase company. They haven't even updated the board and pieces interface options since about 15 years ago.

LOL! Hey, we will take that as a compliment...says this active chess playing 'young child' who holds a college degree and has been rated over 2000 OTB for some 35 years now.

So now the guy (I'm using the pronoun loosely in your case) who was, just a few minutes ago, whining about not wanting to discuss incendiary topics for fear of them bringing out the nastiness in people, is literally following me around just to troll and harass me by responding to all of my posts, not with a topical reply, but with nothing but flaming. Can you say hypocrite boys and girls?

For starters, anyone who feels the need to try to impress someone or pretend to have some sort of "authority position" in a topic of debate, by citing some (probably useless) Mickey Mouse undergrad degree, that has nothing whatsoever to do with the topic of debate, and weak chess rating (did you really think 2000 uscf was supposed to be impressive? LMAO!), has not achieved any authority position in the topic of debate, but has only made it obvious that he is both too mentally weak and incompetent to be able to intelligently argue his position in the debate, as well as making it patently obvious that he is an extremely insecure and emotionally fragile little fellow who is desperately trying to compensate for this. The fact that you haven't improved in chess for over 35 years, as you admit, is beyond pathetic as well, lol.

I could rattle off a resume that would make your pathetic attempt at desperately trying to impress a stranger look highly embarassing. But, unlike you, I'm not an insecure little runt who feels the need to do such a thing. Unlike you, I have self-confidence and don't need to seek out validation from random strangers.

But I'm not surprised that you prefer the simpler Kindergarten version of the Chessbase user interface as the previous versions were probably too complicated and intimidating for you.

Dude...today you have searched for any thread I have posted in recently, just so you can make comments like this. No one wants to see it.

You literally cannot make this up. Here YOU are, responding to MY post, with nothing but insults and nonsense that doesn't have a shred of relevance to MY THREAD OR ANY OF THE POSTS IN THIS THREAD. And you call ME the troll?

You are beyond pathetic! Go find something shiny to stare at while you drool, geezer. Leave the discussion of chess and chess-related topics to those who possess the necessary intelligence to be able to do so!

And please stop begging me to talk to you. While you obviously have no life and no friends, I have better things to do than to babysit an infirm adult.
