Testposition from Mark's match

Post by Eelco de Groot »

Latest game from Mark's match (or quad? what is the correct translation of "vierkamp"? Google is clueless :( It apparently never heard of the word, talks about "four athletes" only or gives random advertisements as a translation.):

Maybe white does not have anything anymore already, but old, well not really very old, Blue Marlin, just as a random example for an engine, sees only zeroes here at move 31 (diagram). Berserk sees nothing in the game. But it appears White is lost pretty much, at least after text 31. Nc4

LcO is already winning, like Morphy, but does your computer see it quickly?

Blue Marlin 14.9a initially at least, sees only zeroes here in the White to move position...

But after Nc4:

Thanks Ajedrecista!

Is it not a bit sobering to see such evaluations though. I mean it is 2023. And if I had this on the chessboard playing White I do think I would resign if it was not an important match in team competition. Even Deep Blue might have a better evaluation than Stockfish! (Just by depth maybe, but we will never know) And Deep Blue really sucked bigtime. Not my words, that was Vincent D.

Winter Dev prefers black at all depths and never sees equality for white.

This doesn't mean Winter's eval is better or even competitive with SFs evaluation. SFs static evaluation is also that black is better, but chess is a concrete game, and SF is not reporting the eval from the current position, but some position deep in its search.
