Does Dragon 3.2 play better positional chess than Stockfish?

Post by Chessqueen »

Has anybody here knows the statistic between Dragon vs Stockfish? I assume that that Stockfish play gasmes that begins with 1.e4 since the positions becomes very tactical which was the reason was Bobby Fischer always or 90% of the times open up with 1.e4. Now the question is Dragon programmed by Wizard Larry Kaufman has given Dragon more chess knowledge than any other chess program. My curiousity is if Dragon has won more chess games from Queen's pawn opening since they are better suited for positional play with fewer tactical possibilities than in king's pawn openings.

NOTE: Probably Graham can answer this question

I selected this Opening the Tarrash Defense, here we see that the c-file is open if we remove all the pieces, and the c-file and d-file are half open the pawn on d5 is isolated, the d4 is a strong square and h3 and d6 are weak, so let Dragon 3.2 play vs Stockfish to see how Dragon 3.2 take advantage of this static position,

Re: Does Dragon 3.2 play better positional chess than Stockfish?

I selected this Opening the Tarrash Defense, here we see that the c-file is open if we remove all the pieces, and the c-file and d-file are half open the pawn on d5 is isolated, the d4 is a strong square and h3 and d6 are weak, so let Dragon 3.2 play vs Stockfish to see how Dragon 3.2 take advantage of this static position,

Let me freely admit the obvious: I tend to look at some of your posts only because I find myself disagreeing with much of what you will say.

It is right to look at the Dynamic and Static features of a position - the Tarrasch is know to be strategically risky for Black who hopes the activity of his pieces can compensate for various positional drawbacks.

Here...to refer to this as a 'static position' is completely wrong.

Have you considered ponying up for Dragon 3.2? Or do you just like posing these questions in the hopes Larry will respond? You could test all you want and for specifically what you want then.

Also, if you are really interested, there are probably many pgn game files of games between the two. You might could get such a file and filter for the 'positions' you want and derive your stats from it.

If you have the Book Test your Positional Play by Robert Bellin and Pietro Ponzetto you will learn from page 11 where I took this position from that in the 2nd paragraph it is stated word by word. " The strategic elements present in a position may be static ( e.g.a passed pawn, an open file, a weak square etc.) which is what wrote or it could be dynamic ( ( e.g.control of the centre, improvement in piece position, pawn mobility etc)

NOTE: Maybe if you purchase this Book you might become a better positional player and understand better what are the different positions called ===> Positional Play by Robert Bellin and Pietro Ponzetto ===>and the book Simple Chess by Michael Stean

You really must try harder.

My quarrel is that you say this tabiya of the Tarrasch is a "static position". That is simply incorrect. It is not a static position or situation.

I have had Test Your Positional Play for...over 30 years.

I am afraid you are mistaking individual trees for the forest...that is to say, the forest is 'the position' which is made up of a bunch of individual elements 'the trees'. The authors are simply 'Analysing the position' - indeed the name of the chapter is Analysing the Position: The Elements. They follow it by looking at the very same position at the start of each of the 3 subsequent chapters as they '2. synthesise those elements'...3. develop a plan based on those...and 4.verify the plan to make sure it is practicable.

In chapter 1 they are asking if there are any "static strategic elements"...and there are. But the position itself can not be considered Static as you have said it is. Indeed after removing the pieces to look for static elements (as you allude to), they then take great pains to point out that "The piece position, and particularly that of the king, can also introduce a new strategic element, or mitigate or aggravate the importance of one of the elments we have just been considering." They then point out that the 'weaknesses' at h3 and d6 are mitigated by the presence of Bg2 and Be7 and follow that up with the words..."weaknesses, more over, which are not fixed". .

Also, if you are implying the position is in Steans nice little book, Simple Chess, it is not. I have the Dover edition. If it is, show me and I will eat the book. Perhaps though you were just trying to make a clumsy joke. It's a really good book...better than Capa's 'Fundamentals' in my opinion.

They then point out that the 'weaknesses' at h3 and d6 are mitigated by the presence of Bg2 and Be7 and follow that up with the words..."weaknesses, more over, which are not fixed".

I would not say that it is better than CapaBlanca Fundamental, it all depend s on the rating of the student, for instance a new chess player that only knows the basics moves of the chess pieces would benefit more by having Capa's Fundamental or Bobby Fisher teach Chess, since it will teach them how to quickly develop their pieces and where to place thier pieces most effectively where as, Simple chess is a book for more advanced players in the range of 1300 thru 1400 that want to advance to the next rating level or reach close to 1700 thru 2000. Do NOT be deceived by the title Simple Chess is NOT a simple chess Book. The reason for the title Simple Chess is that Michael Stean decided to name it like that because he takes complicated position from Grandmaster and break it down into smaller fragments or manageable and easy to understand chess concepts for student of the level between 1300 thru 2000 as Michael stein explained when you are giving a long arithmetical division you can NOT simply break it down in one simple Step, but primarily school taught us to find the answer by a series of simple division processes ( Namely Long division as it is with complicated chess positions that needs to be broken down into simple concept that are easy for chess student to digest.

Indeed after removing the pieces to look for static elements (as you allude to
