Small scale networks

I am fascinated with the whole concept of generating an evaluating score just by letting to selfplay a computer and I would like to try repeat myself this whole procedure. However, I am afraid that I am lacking both the hardware reources and the time to start a network building from the beginnig position of a chess game. Do you think that it would be possible to train a net starting from a simpler position? I would really appreciate any advice or pointing to resource that could get just me started on this.
