Early computer chess video

Post by Andrew »

Not sure if this has been posted before, but this film from 1967
has a brief bit about 10 min in of an early chess propgram.

Any ideas what it might be?

Hello:

Good find and fast answer! Well done.

Explaining a little more, the chess computer narration starts around 10:23 and ends around 11:25. The sample game played at the video starts:

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Bc4 Nxe4 4. O-O Nc6

Though it is showed as a kind of long descriptive notation.

The trophy inscription says:

Code: Select all

  APRIL 1967
AMATEUR CHESS
  TOURNAMENT
    BOSTON

  1st PLACE
   CLASS D
Class D rating span should be in the USCF rating range 1200 to 1399 according to Wikipedia. That makes sense with the info provided at the page 23 of the February 1967 issue of Chess Life magazine:

Chess Life wrote:"MacHack VI's current rating is a provisional 1239 (Class D). [...]
In fact, Chess Life issue of August 1967 dedicates a short article about that Boston amateur tournament of April 1967 at the end of the page 237:

Chess Life wrote:MacHack VI Strikes Again
28 players participated in the Boston Amateur April 22-23. Alex Keyes and Verne Kayser tied for first with 4½ in the five-round event; Keyes was the winner on tie-break. In descending order other placers were Ronald Gravatt, John Peters, John Timm, and Peter Williamson, all with 3½.
MacHack VI scored three points after having to forfeit the first game on account of technical difficulties (headache or something). The rising young computer then played the next four rounds without a loss (two wins, two draws).
Other issues of this chess magazine ought to bring valuable info.

This is not the first time that the Greenblatt chess program or MacHack VI appears at TalkChess. For example:

Re: First move without opening book - search or hardcode?

There are many more threads featuring Greenblatt, just using the search engine of the forum. The same with MacHack. Enjoy!

Thanks for sharing! I shared it with my youngest "Mini Me" (11) He is very interested in Computers and Programming, so I am sure he will find it interesting.

AdminX ... since many years ... you are really interested on computer chess topics with good messages. I missed more of these people. In Winboard times we had houndreds. Often these people also wrote about forgotten stories from the past. Many things are becoming more and more superficial, not only computer chess. The main reason for so many problems we create for ourselves. Have a nice day, only loud thinking ... not more!

Good to see a few people enjoyed this video, maybe something they had not seen before!

I found this completely by accident, nothing in the description mentioned chess content.

I do wonder if anyone's preserved it or it's descendants.
