For test matches I need all engines to have the same compute per second available to them. I worry that with P-Cores and E-Cores that is not guaranteed and that it would fuck up my test results. So AMD!

I have used Intel for 20+ years after having a massively bad experience with a Athlon Thunderbird 1400 on top of a mainboard running the VIA KT133A chipset. That combination was the golden standard for speed back in 2001, but you had to have JUST the right additional hardware to NOT make it unstable. I had a €300 sound card at the moment, and a €200 SCSI card coming from my previous computer that had run for 3 years without issue, but they caused instability in the AMD system. I then sold that system, switched back to Intel, and those cards worked for another 5 years until I replaced that Intel system.

At that point I wrote off AMD, and I didn't even consider them (not for cpu, nor graphics) until Zen1 rolled around.

Nowadays, after raving reviews for Zen1, Zen2 (except the BMI instructions), and Zen3, I took the plunge to build an AMD system on the basis of a 7950X on top of the AMD X670E chipset. I even switched my graphics card from nVidia (I had nVidia cards since they first appeared on the scene right after 3dfx) to AMD. The reason is that AMD's graphics drivers are completely open source, and I prefer to run Linux on my personal systems these days. Another reason to go for the 7950X is because it has 16 cores and no low-power cores (same reason as Lithander mentioned), and AFAIK, I can't get that with Intel, except in some quite expensive Xeon or older HEDT-cpu's that require equally expensive mainboards.

I've had absolutely no issues this time around.

So I don't really mind, as long as AMD keeps their stuff stable. I hope that one or both of them will keep introducing high core-count CPU's (16 and up) without low-power cores (or provide an option to disable them). I'll consider a new computer in another 8-10 years or so.

Hi there,

I use AMD and Intel processors.
I have no problems with either.
AMD has more cores, power consumption is also great.

But all in all...
Price is also important.
I vote for Intel.

At the end of last year I had a lot of good experiences with different i5 mini PCs (12th generation). The price is good and 8 cores are enough, the energy consumption is great. P-Core and E-Core is a problem. So I am thinking of changing my hardware next year to 3 of the same i5 Mini-PCs to test the engines. But I will wait for the next Intel generation and compare it to the current AMD generation.

OK, the AMD 5950x I use for chess is great. The reason I keep one of the three systems I had.
The i9-10900k with 10 cores (5 years old) is also super and can run at 5Ghz but needs too much power at 5.0Ghz.

Power consumption is most important to me.
Price is also important.

Best
Frank

My favourite processor is Intel i5-11600k.
I like it more as i5-12600k ...

AMD because they have the better tech at the moment, and Intel doesn't get their act together. The whole e-core nonsense is just Intel's inability to make their p-cores somewhat efficient. That said, I certainly wouldn't buy anything first gen from AMD because they usually fail to get it right straight away.

I still like the old Intel Skylake series, efficiency cores are no use for me, and since Zen3 AMD has clearly an edge.

I have set Windows power management to Best Performance and per HWInfo core frequencies are equal.

Yep.

With Xeon you can escape the efficiency cores, but you have to pay for it :(

Yes, 10th Gen Intel (Comet Lake) are pretty good, and the 65w versions especially. My 10-core i9-10900 serves me well, and through the BIOS you can stay with 65w or set it in steps upwards from that to get any level of performance that you like. I think mine is set at 95W.

Frequencies may be equal, but an E-core delivers a lot less performance than a P-core.
